Kayaking/Camping in the Heart of the Everglades

Another short notice trip:

If you were looking for an adventure.....this is it!!

This time we'll be paddling the Hell's Bay Canoe Trail (hell to get in and hell to get out). The purpose of this expedition is to plot and record on our GPS the route and location to Pearl Bay's Chickee for future Backcountry/Primitive camping. We will camp on Pearl Bay Chickee  on Saturday night. Bring your "free standing" tent, since we won't be able to stake our tents on the Chickee.

For those who don't know what a Chickee is- It's a wooden platform held above water by stilts and located deep in the Everglades. They have enough room to pitch four small tents on each platform and are provided with an outhouse.

Total length: 3 miles one way.

You can rent a Canoe at Everglades International Hostel [masked]) if you don't own one. Their overnight rates are very affordable, with no time limit. They will provide foam and rope and they will help you to secure the canoe on the roof of your car.

Please be advised that the Hell's Bay Canoe Trail is a challenging one. It has lots of narrow passages, and it can be difficult at some points. The trail can be confusing at times, and one can get lost by just missing a turn, so.......quitting half way and going back on your own is out of the question. We'll start as a group, stay as a group, and end as a group. I will provide up to six 2-way radios, that way we can be "in touch" at all times.

Remember to bring the usual: Enough food for two days, camping gear, bug repellent, snacks, water, a hat, sunscreen, fishing gear and a First Aid Kit (if you have one).

My Cell:[masked] 5883.

If you were looking for an adventure....this is it!! Be there, if you dare.

Hi Armando - I'll call you when I get to the park. Are you going to stop at Coe visitor center ?

    December 27, 2013

    • Armando

Hi Harold. We are going straight to the Flamingo Marina. I will be there before they open....I want to secure the backcountry permit from them. I think it will be a fee of $5.00 per person plus $10.00 for the permit.

We could kayak the Nine Mile Pond canoe trail on Sunday.

My best guess is that we'll be arriving around noon at the pond's launching site.....if we decide to do that paddling. I am inclined to go for it.

Will you be going if rain ?

    December 26, 2013

    • Armando

Rain is not predicted for Saturday, however.....there is a 40% chance of rain on Sunday. Rain is not a problem, thunderstorms is what I am afraid of.
