SABAL POINT SANCTUARY HIKE: Let’s walk after all the holiday cheer

We‘ll hike 3.5 miles in Sabal Point Sanctuary to the Little Wekiva River, then back, for a total of 7 miles round trip. This trail is an old raised tram road, built a foot above the surroundings, and was once used for logging the Wekiva River swamp. The Audubon Society manages this 600 acre preserve which is part of the Wekiva River Buffer Conservation area. Home to deer, black bear, turkey and lots of wildlife (we saw a huge rattlesnake here, too) the area was logged 100 years ago but is now a protected area. Meet at 10:00am at First Baptist Church, Sweetwater (3800 Wekiva Springs Rd, Longwood) and carpool to the trailhead which only has room for 5 cars. Children are welcome and if they get tired, they can turn around any time. Bring mosquito repellant if it has rained and bring some money for an after hike beer at Wekiva Island.

A nice hike & great group of people. Wished there was a more open lunch spot, so we all could have sat & chatted, but that's just the way the trail was - not anyone's fault.

    January 2, 2014

    • Mary-Slater L.

Yes, I posted the 2nd activity so that people can attend the Friends of Wekiva event if they don't want to come on my outing.

Is there a trail map that can be downloaded online?

Hey Mary: is this a dog-friendly event: Hollie is a very gentle German Wire-haired Pointer, who loves hiking with people. I can be a carpool vehicle and manage 4 passengers (3 on rear seat) with Hollie in back.
Following up: would it be possible to park along road a the Sanctuary if more than 5 cars are needed? MJ

Sorry-no dogs since I have seen a huge rattlesnake on this trail and with so many people coming, there just is not enough room for wildlife, people and pets.

Hi Mary, didn't see a reply. Are dogs welcome? I would love to bring my German shepherd.
She is friendly quiet and obedient. Mark James could she ride with Hollie?

Hi Mary-I hate to cancel but my company from NJ that was supposed to arrive Sunday will be here sooner due to an earlier departure because of the BIG STORM UP NORTH! Also-the group size is a bit large for me. It's a great walk which I did years ago with Wiley Dikes Jr. and his wife. It was right after the 04 hurricanes and did we have a time climbing over downed trees. You should have a much easier time of it! Enjoy the day.
