2013 Winter Wednesday Hiking Series - Hike 11 - Seminole State Forest

2013  WINTER WEDNESDAY HIKING SERIES
By Rachael Augspurg

Winter is a great time to hike in Florida. Each Wednesday in January, February & March there will be an 7-8 mile day hike on the FNST.  This is the 19th year this annual hiking series has taken place in Central Florida. The plan is to celebrate the Florida National Scenic Trail's 30 years, by hiking a portion of  the FNST each winter Wednesday between Ocala National Forest and Tosohatchee WMA.  We will start at the Wekiva River  and HIKE ACROSS SEMINOLE COUNTY  to celebrate the county's 100 years.  Then we will proceed south on the FNST to SR 50.  Then we will return to the Wekiva River and hike north on the FNST to the Ocala National Forest.

Mark your calendars and clear your schedule on Wednesdays so you can join the group and “HIKE ON WEDNESDAY!”

Hike 11: Seminole State Forest - Out & Back (8.5 miles). Hike the FNST from the north entrance of Seminole State Forest of SR 44 to Blackwater Creek. Meet at the north entrance parking off SR 44 (fee).

I take my therapy dog to the Boggy Creak Camp once per month, and then walk into the forest. It will be good to have company

Haven't been on a hike before. What do I need to bring?

    March 17, 2013

First, be sure you can walk 8.5 miles. Then wear good, comfortable hiking shoes or boots. Bring hat, sunscreen, two quarts of water and lunch/snacks.

Many folks just wear a good pair of well broken in tennis shoes that they feel comfortable in and are used to walking in. No fancy gear required but do bring water and a snack. Some people bring a folded up garbage bag to sit on during breaks. In case of rain a lightweight poncho might be nice. People are friendly and will welcome you. On this hike there are several drop out points where we double back that will allow you to stop if you don't feel like going all eight miles. Note the meeting spot change to Lower Wekiva Preserve off of hwy46 by the Wekiva River.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
