All! As a TV investigative reporter for 18 years in St. Louis/Miami, I covered the worst abuse stories, did my share of picketing circuses with babes in arms. As I watched every single person in my family get sick and/or die long, painful diseased-riddled deaths, while I saved myself from almost dying of a colon blockage, health issues of eating a vegan diet took equal importance. Newsroom management only covered animal rights stories when PETA did outrageous stunts. I chose the health and money "angle" because I believed the time was right for this under-reported fact...that eating a vegan diet saves money, the environment and lives of all kinds.
Vegan. Since my book came out in June '11, my publisher has had me invited to the largest VegFests in the US and Canada...Boston, New York, Toronto, Seattle etc. I'll be speaking at animal rights conferences in Washington, DC and San Francisco soon. In Seattle, during his talk, I heard Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine's Dr. Barnard mention my book. He told me afterwards, "The perceived expensive cost of eating vegan is the last hold-out and objection many people have." I wrote the book after seeing one too many news stories showing women loading carts with Twinkies and mac/cheese saying, "You just can't eat well on a budget."
My life is dedicated to educating others about the money saved not only at the store, but by avoiding diseases that send you to expensive doctors and hospitals.
Yes, always. I am swamped with all kind of requests to speak, write, be interviewed...which I love. My second book manuscript is due to the publisher 5/04. That is how I hope I am helping animals. Writing/speaking is my passion. Other than competing in running events, and trying to show you get enough protein to do all that on a vegan diet (my 100 meter times are :06 slower than most NCAA-qualifying times on the girls on the NCAA USC track team), I don't take much time for myself to do other things. But I love to see the work that you all are doing and try to help in any way I can.
