Sculptures created by gardeners using living plants

These inspiring images show how artistically sculptures can be produced using garden plants. These examples are from the international Montreal Mosaiculture Exhibition, displaying the winners in the 2013 competition. We wouldn't dare to compete.

The sculptures are built on steel or aluminum forms wrapped with wire mesh. They're filled with earth and planted with flowers, ivies, grasses and mosses, whose foliage provides texture and color. Interior watering systems and growing medium were added so that the flowers could last through the entire summer. Considered the world's most prestigious exhibition of this refined horticultural art, the 2013 edition of the competition was displayed in the Montreal Botanical Gardens. More than three million flowers were raised in greenhouses throughout Quebec, then shipped to the garden in May for the use of some 200 artistic competitors from 20 countries. Our garden club members aren't likely to try to duplicate these creations. But browsing through the photos is still inspiring, showing what beauty can be created using nature's bounty. Enjoy.
