If you haven't flown into Ocean City, NJ yet, you are missing a real gem of a trip for our small planes. At an elevation of 5 feet, the almost-3,000-foot runway is well maintained, as is the large tarmac with plenty of spots available for transient parking.
What: Who wants to sit on the Bay Bridge, wondering when you will get off it? You don't have to with this trip. Sit back and enjoy this flight with beautiful views of Baltimore, the Chesapeake Bay, and of course our friend the Atlantic Ocean. The flight is about 1 to 1.5 hours (ok, if the truth be known, after all is said and done, one could probably drive there in about the same time as fly, hence the saying "If you have time to spare, go by air", but I mean - really - who wants to do that?) Anyway, it's a perfect daytime destination in the summer. The beach is beautiful and rather flat, walkable in bare feet, regular walking shoes, or anything in between. It's about a 2-mile walk to the shopping area and restaurants (click the link for a map), with a taxi as an option as well, one or both ways. Make sure you bring cash, though, because a lot of the places don't take credit cards, and hardly anyone takes American Express.
How Long: Although an easy day trip, people would have the option of staying overnight for a fantastic weekend. The only hitch to that, of course, is that everyone in one plane has to do the same thing. Pilots will post if they are looking to do a multi-day trip. I posted a start time of 8am, figuring travel to your departure airport, pre-flight, taxi, and flight time, but this could vary a lot depending on the plane and departure point. Let's plan on meeting at the airport (26N) between 10:30 and 11 am. This should give us plenty of time to enjoy the beach, and plan on leaving the beach area around 6pm or so. Again, this could vary based on what people want to do, their pilot's night currency, etc.
What to take:
- Cash for food and shops (not there is an additional $12 landing fee per plane)
- Beach stuff - towel, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, beach chair, whatever you want but make sure you have enough room to carry it, and include it in your weight estimate
- Shoes to walk from the airport and along the boardwalk, as well as on the beach, depending on which of all of those you're intending on doing
- Water or other drinks
- Food if you don't want to eat at a restaurant
- Shade if you want to lounge on the beach
Passengers only (required reading) : I'm charging $103.30 for the event fee through PayPal. $3.30 is the fee for PayPal, and $100 will go toward your flight costs if you wind up attending. The $100 is not payment for your flight , nor is it a guarantee of any kind that you will be able to fly or be provided any services whatsoever. It is only, and I stress only , an event fee to hold your place on this event. If you cancel in time and someone on the wait list can take your place, then you can get a refund (minus the fee), otherwise don't expect one unless your flight is canceled. Please note that you will owe the balance of your flight cost to your pilot on the day of the flight , so bring a check or cash to cover the balance (check with your pilot to make sure they will accept a check). Note also that the pilots can only give you estimates for the flight cost; the FAA requires that we do not exceed actual costs, and those are not known until after the flight. Additional costs, such as lunch or lodging are not included in the estimates. Note also that pilots renting planes have monetary obligations and if you cancel late, for any reason , you may not get all or any of your event fee refunded.
Note that you must answer all of the required questions or you will be removed from the attendees. This is true even if you get on the waiting list.
REFUNDS: You can get a refund if your flight is canceled, you cancel and someone takes your place, or you are switched to a different pilot/plane and want to cancel. Refunds do not include a refund of your PayPal fee (e.g. $1.80 or $3.30). Note that each person pays their own way insofar as food, lodging, rental car, etc.
MEETING US: Those who are leaving from Leesburg can meet outside the Starbuck's at the South Lakes Village Center on South Lakes Drive in Reston, and we can carpool to Leesburg. If you want to carpool from or to a different location, indicate that in your RSVP or send me a note and we can add it to this description. Of course people can always meet at the respective airports; specific instructions for meeting at the airports will be sent via email to the attendees prior to the flight.
FLIGHT TIMES: The flight is approximately 1 to 1.5 hours one-way (depending on a lot of factors), plus some time for ground operations, so expect around 3+ hours total flight costs (shared). Of course all the planes differ in speed, so there can be a lot of variance in this number.
