Ocracoke Island Getaway (Cancelled)

Ocracoke Island is part of North Carolina's Outer Banks.  There are no roads from the mainland or other islands, so it is accessible only by sea or air, preferably the latter.  It is a bit over 2 hours @ 120 kts, and we can fly down the Outer Banks for some nice views of the shore.

There is a lot to do on the island including a walking tour of the beautiful harbor and town, a museum, horseback riding, bike riding, and of course walking along and enjoying a beautiful beach.

There would be an option to stay overnight also, but all the people in a plane must agree to do this.  I'm planning on staying one or two nights, if possible.  With the three-day weekend, we can have a few more options in terms of going or staying.  Uday is going to research some options for staying there - I know there are several places, plus a campground on the beach about three miles from the airport.  So, I will add a question about what days you are planning on going, staying overnight, etc., so when you sign up make sure to add that so planes and passengers can be paired according to the same schedule.  If you can only make one or two of the days, no problem, just indicate which and what flexibility there is.

Passengers only (required reading) : I'm charging $103.30 for the event fee through PayPal.  $3.30 is the fee for PayPal, and $100 will go toward your flight costs if you wind up attending.  The $100 is not payment for your flight , nor is it a guarantee of any kind that you will be able to fly or be provided any services whatsoever.  It is only, and I stress only , an event fee to hold your place on this event.  If you cancel in time and someone on the wait list can take your place, then you can get a refund, otherwise don't expect one unless your flight is canceled.  Please note that you will owe the balance of your flight cost to your pilot on the day of the flight , so bring a check or cash to cover the balance (check with your pilot to make sure they will accept a check).  Note also that the pilots can only give you estimates for the flight cost; the FAA requires that we do not exceed actual costs, and those are not known until after the flight.  Additional costs, such as lunch or lodging are not included in the estimates.  Note also that pilots renting planes have monetary obligations and if you cancel late, for any reason , you may not get all or any of your event fee refunded.

Note that you must answer all of the required questions or you will be removed from the attendees.  This is true even if you get on the waiting list.

REFUNDS: You can get a refund if your flight is canceled, you cancel and someone takes your place, or you are switched to a different pilot/plane and want to cancel. Note that each person pays their own way insofar as food, lodging, rental car, etc.

MEETING US: Those who want can meet outside the Starbuck's at the South Lakes Village Center on South Lakes Drive in Reston, and we can carpool to Leesburg or other airports. If you want to carpool from a different location, indicate that in your RSVP or send one of the organizers a note and we can add it to this description. Of course people can always meet at the respective airports; specific instructions for meeting at the airports will be sent via email to the attendees prior to the flight.

FLIGHT TIMES: The flight is approximately 2.5 hours one-way (for the slower planes), plus some time for ground operations, so expect around 5-6 hours total flight costs.

EXPECTED ITINARARY (for Alan's plane, departing Leesburg):

9:00am Depart Starbuck's

9:30am Arrive Leesburg

10:30am Depart Leesburg for Ocracoke (W95)

12:30pm Arrive W95

Stay one or two days, then on the last day:

4:00pm (or before dark) Depart W95 for return flight

6:30pm Arrive back at Leesburg

7:30pm Arrive back at Starbuck's

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

An information e-mail with your pilot’s phone number will be sent prior to the trip. Please take the phone number of your pilot to help coordinate during the trip.

I use to fly out to OC, NJ when I lived in Philly. It's a short walk to the boardwalk and a number of places to eat. I haven't been there in 20 years, but it was always a good trip. The WX is looking a bit wet for The weekend right now, let us know, I'm game.

My group and I are just going out for the day. If anyone has any suggestions on alternates, let me know.

Hey, Woody, Ocean City, NJ is a really nice day trip to a beach. If you have foreflight, check out the comments. I haven't figured out an alternative yet for Ocracoke, I'll update the attendees later today or tomorrow.

You guys have fun! I hope to be able to go on one of these trips someday! I am just a passenger but I have many organizational skills that will lend to a great trip! Please keep me in mind for the next trip!

Did I just hear you volunteer to be an organizer, Christine?

You could fly to Manteo (MQI) and drive the rest of the way in a rental car. I don't know about other camping areas but there are a lot of rental properties. I suggest the Ocracoke Harbor Inn (www.ocracokeharborinn.com).

Looks like the weather will be OK this weekend but both W95 and the camping area remain closed with this continuing government shutdown. Thoughts on options?

Check NOTAMS everyone. Unless something changes this week, W95 (Ocracoke), HSE (Hatteras), and FFA (First Flight) are closed.

Nikita, I think that was wrong date since I ask myself same question. Look like correct date is Oct 12 which is Saturday but double check.

So excited! I'd like to request the Leesburg location for easing traveling with the kid, but if it can't be done, we'll go wherever we need to go.

I love to go on the weekend before, but not on Tuesday unfortunately. Why Tuesday???
