Penn's Cave

Penn's Cave is an underground, water-filled cave that can be toured by boat.  This is an hour flight due North in Pennsylvania, and the visitor's center to the cave is located about 0.65 miles from the airport.  I went there a couple of years ago and I see they have added some interesting things to do.  Note that some of the things I might talk about, and opinions I might mention, may have changed, I'm going based on what I knew then.

Here's my plan:

Let's plan on meeting at the airport around 11am.  From there, it is a nice 0.65-mile walk to the visitor's center.  That's where we buy tickets.  They also have a nice gift shop with some unusual things in it (at, imho, not unreasonable prices) and also a place to buy burgers, chips, etc., as well as what I thought was the best chocolate milkshake this side of heven (yes, it's spelled right).

Once we collect ourselves, we can get tickets and try to all get in the same boat.  Then we can browse the gift shop, outside, do one of the other fun things, whatever, until we get to our cave tour.  Actually, there are several tours, we don't really all have to do the cave tour, but for now let's say we do.  We walk down, down, to the boat and climb in and begin an hour-long adventure mostly underground, and briefly pop up at the lake (you can see it to the east of the road on the map).  Then we go back to our planes and fly back.  So here's my itinerary:

08:45 am - meet at Starbuck's to carpool to Leesburg - or -
09:15 am - meet at Leesburg airport terminal
10:00 am - depart KJYO
10:45 am - arrive at Penns Cave airport N74
11:30 am - meet at the visitor center (out front)
--- in between is a bit uncertain because we don't know when
--- we will be able to get tickets for or what everyone will want to
--- do, but in any case...
05:00 pm - walk back to the airport
06:30 pm - depart for the return trip
07:30 pm - arrive back at Leesburg
08:15 pm - depart Leesburg after helping to clean off the bugs
08:45 pm - arrive back at Starbucks

Each of the pilots below have given an estimate for the hourly cost and expected time. Generally these estimates are pretty close, but the FAA only allows us to use actual costs, not estimates, so we can't say exactly right now what you would pay for the trip. Please bring cash or a check or make arrangements with your pilot for other forms of payment.  This will be due at the completion of the trip.

Please answer all of the required questions if you RSVP yes, even if you are getting on the wait list.  The answers are an important part of getting off the wait list.  We can't assign you to a plane until we know your weight.

Pilots: Note that a third of the runway is pretty sloped.  Use caution when landing or taking off.  There are no services or night ops at this airport, so plan accordingly.

Here is some info on the planes and pilots that have signed up so far. If you're a pilot and want to take your own plane, send me a note with weights, cost, differences in itinerary or location, and whatever pilot info you want to share (similar info to what I have).  Please also include your plane N-number and phone number.

I heard you guys ended up in Ocean City NJ instead. I think we should still try to do the Penn's Cave sometime this summer. I like the looks of it.

Well, the day didn't actually go as originally planned, but we wound up having a great day at the beach. Thanks to everyone who attended and were so flexible.

Morning folks, today is the big day. Just a note to pilots, use[masked] for the air to air band. If that doesn't work, try the unofficial 123.45. We have a couple of things to discuss mid flight. Last one there is a rotten egg!

Folks, I hate to disappoint everyone, but I have to cancel. My son and I got sick and it will be unlikely that I will feel well enough on Saturday to fly the plane. Sorry. I hope we can fly again soon. Nikita

No problem at all. I'm sure there will be more opportunities as the weather in finally warming up. Rest up

Hello friends, unfortunately I'll not be joining you on this trip on Saturday. Something came up that requires my attention. This would open up a seat on Woody's plane. Have fun at Penn's cave!

Basil, you're still nordo on meetup (no radio). They blocked emails for you now. Sorry I had to move you back to the wait list, but I couldn't quite make it work with the weights. I'm much heavier than you, so that's not a dig. I'll let you know if anything changes so you can get back in.

Alan, can you confirm that my two guests and I will fly out of leesburg? I notice the pilots are at various airports.

Claudine, the latest I have was you and your family with me in Leesburg, but I haven't finalized that yet. When I get back I'll figure everything out and let everyone know.

Hey, Basil, if you happen to see this, I tried to send you an email and meetup says you have been "recently unreachable". You should find out what the problem is. Also, if you want to get taken off the wait list, you will need to answer all the required questions.
