3.5 D&D Campaign - "Shadow Over Volfsten"

Shadows of a distant past, legends from a time forgotten, heroes from a barren realm…

"A shadow has fallen over the wintry kingdom of Volfsten. As the realm struggles to deal with a relentless and seemingly indomitable enemy, several adventurers will shed their humble beginnings to take up the mantle of valor. Destiny beckons this young and able contingent of champions, but the forces of evil are hard at work to undo their efforts…"

This event will be held in the game room at Gryphon's Games & Comics (2020 S. College Ave, Unit B, Fort Collins, CO  80525) from 8:00 PM to 10:30 PM. Bring a character for this event, or pre-generated characters can be provided for those that need them. For more information on character creation, see below.

We will be charging $2 per head per event for DM store credit.

New to 3.5 edition Dungeons & Dragons (or D&D in general)? Pick up a Player's Handbook to familiarize yourself, then pick an event and jump in! The best way to learn is by playing!

Please have a character made in advance. Before creating a character, be sure to visit the Obsidian Portal page for this campaign: https://shadowovervolfsten.obsidianportal.com/. This site contains detailed information specific to this campaign, including campaign setting and common knowledge for characters. It is suggested that you review the Adventure Log, Wiki, and Map tabs for information.

Please send your character concept to Dungeon Master John in a message, as there may be some campaign restrictions on races, classes, or special abilities.

If you have any questions regarding this meetup, the campaign, character creation, or anything else, send Dungeon Master John a message or simply post in the conversation section at the bottom of this page.

Suggested Materials:

3.5 edition Dungeons & Dragons "Player's Handbook", set of dice, any campaign notes, notebook/paper, pen/pencil, a miniature (or other marker), and a set of dice (d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20, and %d).

I've messaged the Meetup Organizer to request another Meetup to be made. If everything goes as planned, I will be able to keep you guys RSVP'd for next week as well. We'll see what happens - keep an eye on this!

If a newbie can be a spellcaster, then I'm in!

John, I'll read up on the sorcerer specs and be there by 7:20. No worries. I haven't played d&d since middle school.

Pelor be praised! We have a spellcaster (and a sorcerer, no less)!

      January 9, 2014

  • Aaron

Oops. I changed my char to a ranger, though pretty much the same concept. So it looks like we will be a very skillful, combat oriented party. If anyone has a friend who loves to play a spellcaster, you should invite them!

    • Johnathan M.

Spellcaster would be nice... We have now have a ranger, a rogue, a monk, and a fighter.

      January 5, 2014

  • Johnathan M.

So far, we have a druid for sure, and maybe a rogue and a monk.

Don't forget - I need your character concepts before we start so that I can plan ahead. Please message them to me withing the next week.

As an incentive, each player that gets his/her character concept in to me by January 5th will start play with one of the following:
1.) An additional bonus feat of your choice, as long as you meet the requirements.
2.) An additional 50 starting gold.
    3.) 500 experience points (that's half-way to level 2).

Hey all, I was wondering if, as people decide, could we all post our character concepts here? I'd love to know how the party is coming together.
I'll go first: I'm going to be a druid who's abilities revolve around shapeshifting. He'll be a very feral, animalistic character who's worldview very much revolves around evaluating everyone as either predator or prey.

    [CAMPAIGN BACKSTORY]

    THE CALL TO ADVENTURE (CONT...)

The Jubilee is, in part, a multi-event sporting contest. The list of sporting events have historically included the following: jousting, a hunting competition, obstacle courses, wrestling matches, an archery contest, and – most famously – a dueling tournament.
Any person can enter into the dueling tournament, provided they can afford the registration fee of 10 gold (this money goes toward hosting the activities).

To start this adventure, your character should be traveling to the village of Vigil’s Watch. What brings you this far North – the Jubilee… or something else?

    [CAMPAIGN BACKSTORY]

    THE CALL TO ADVENTURE

This campaign takes place – almost exclusively – in the region of Volfsten. This does not mean, necessarily, that your character need be native to Volfsten.

Your adventure begins at the Solstice Jubilee, an annual celebration in the land of Volfsten. This day celebrates the end of the Blood Wars and the end of tyranny in Volfsten. Every year, the Jubilee attracts peoples of all cultures from every corner of Baltaria. Feasting, drinking, performances, and general merrymaking make for a festive atmosphere. The Jubilee occurs over the course of several days in the village of Vigil’s Watch.

    [CAMPAIGN BACKSTORY]

    ANCIENT HISTORY (CONT...)

The legendary hero, Kain Volfyr united the clans of Volfsten and resisted the Vermici family. Kain slew the warlord, thus claiming the capital city. The city was later renamed in his honor, and a bronze statue of Kain Volfyr remains in the plaza of Volfstengrad to this day. The Volfyr family has ruled Volfsten for nearly two hundred years now. Kain’s descendant, Darius, is the current King of Volfsten.

    [CAMPAIGN BACKSTORY]

    ANCIENT HISTORY

Volfstengrad is a city steeped in history-
The city was built thousands of years ago by the dwarves. At that time, it was called Fort Balderk. During a short ice-age, the water levels of the Norwoth Sea rose, forcing the dwarves to migrate west, where they eventually settled in the Giant’s Club Mountains.
Once the water levels receded, a warlord and his clan settled the then-abandoned dwarven city, renaming it Vermici (after his family’s name). The Vermici family began a campaign to conquer the baronies of Volfsten, and sparked what would be one of the bloodiest civil wars in all of history. The Blood Wars, as they were later called, resulted in the innumerable deaths.

    [CAMPAIGN BACKSTORY]

    VOLFSTENGRAD
Volfstengrad is the capital city of Volfsten. Perched atop wave-battered cliffs that overlook the Norwoth Sea, Volfstengrad is a frost-bitten city wracked by storms. Despite the poor weather of the area, Volfstengrad has stood for centuries as a hub for trade. It attracts peoples of all cultures and races, making it the largest, most diverse city in the North.

    ABILITY SCORES:
When creating a character, here's the method I'd like you to use to generate ability scores:

Roll four six-sided dice (4d6), dropping the lowest; so, if you roll a 5, 5, 4, and 2, you would drop the 2 and add the rest together, giving you a 14. Do this a total of seven times, then drop the lowest of these seven totals, leaving you with six totals. For example, if your seven totals are 17, 15, 14, 13, 13, 12, and 10, you would drop the 10 and use the other six.

After doing this, if any of your six ability scores are (without racial bonuses) 8 or below, you can do this process all over.

Once you have your ability scores, apply your racial bonuses and you're set!

Don't forget to send me your character concepts! Message me when you have an idea. If you need ideas, I'll be happy to help.

Players start at level 1. For information on the campaign setting, use the link above in the description. As for campaign backstory, I'll compile it here by the end of today (Wednesday the 18th) and have it in the description above. I'd do it now, but it's 1:30 AM. A DM must sleep sometime.... I suppose.

      December 18, 2013

    • Johnathan M.

Actually, I'll send it to you in a message because it's probably too much to put in the description.
