Cooking dinner for Women and Children's Shelter at InnVision Shelter Network.

March was an extremely busy month.  We cooked and fed at InnVision, San Francisco and the Sunnyvale Armoury.  A heartfelt thank you again to those who volunteered and donated time, money and food.

Our April feeding at the Women’s and children’s shelter  will be on Sunday, 13 April.  All volunteers, please be on time at 3 pm as we will have a brief meeting to go over some rules that InnVision requires of us.

Our menu for April  will be ham, roast chicken, spaghetti for the kids, salad, dessert.  (do we still want to serve chicken soup as the weather is getting warmer?) (We can also just get roast chicken and shred to mix with pasta and cheese, no sauce.  ) Carmen is donating the ham so we need donations of already roasted chicken from Costco.  We think that 5 whole roasted chickens should be enough.  We also need donations for the spaghetti, salad, dessert.  Please advise if you will donate time or food or both.

I look forward to seeing to seeing you next week-end.  There are many of you who have signed up to join the group but have not shown up to a single event.  Please try to come this month!

The food prep sink was repaired on 05/01/14 by Rayne Plumbing and Sewer Service, Inc. at 517 Madera Ave. San Jose, CA 95112 (408)[masked] They volunteered their time and efforts at their expense. Please show our appreciation to Rayne Plumbing on facebook or other reputable social media.

Does anyone know how many women and kids are there on Sunday? Should I call the shelter?

    May 6, 2014

  • carmen

All, thank you for donations but please stick with what we need as the menu is set. Howard, please bring French bread. We need 5 loaves. Do indicate how many you will be donating and if others can also donate, that would be wonderful. You don't have to atend to donate. I cannot attend as it is Mother's Day but I did donate for the meatloaf. So donations are highly encouraged and very welcomed. Please indicate what you wish to donate. Thank you very much! Happy Monday!

Hi Bea, I actually have a partial tub of margarine that I have left over from our time at the Sunnyvale Armory. It should be enough for the 5 loaves of French bread,.

    • Bea M.

      Ok Kathleen. Thanks.

Anyone want to donate veggies for roasting?
Thank you! Kathleen, what else do you need for the chicken and rice?

    May 5, 2014

    • Sunil B.

Sure I can get some. How much of each veggies listed in spreadsheet do we need? Can someone please update spreadsheet?

      May 5, 2014

    • Kathleen B.

For the Chicken & Rice dish, I'm going to need the following; a couple bags of frozen chicken tenders, two can of Campbels cream of chicken mushroom soup, two cans of Campbell's cream of celery and 4 cups of rice.

  • carmen

Bea, up to you what type of butter you want to get. The important thing is that it will be soft enough to spread at the center when you are ready to cut and spread the bread. Thank you.

    May 5, 2014

    • Bea M.

      Ok. Thank you.

      May 5, 2014

  • carmen

Sunil, spreadsheet is updated. Purchase 1 lb ea of string beans, carrots, bell pepper….someone can pan roast these at the center or cook ahead of time or meet up with Cheryl and she can cook it ahead of time. Please connect with Cheryl and make arrangements unless you want to cook them yourself. Sorry team, but I won't be there on Sunday so trying to coordinate things ahead of time.

    May 5, 2014

  • carmen

Cheryl, that should be fine as there will be other foods. And this group is not that fond of veggies. Thank you. What other veggies do you need? I can donate some so can get to you. Send me an email…thank you.

I was going to use a recipe I found to make enough to serve 20. If someone else wants to make enough to serve 20?

    May 5, 2014

  • carmen

    Hello Bea,

I think 2 sticks should do it. Thank you!

    May 5, 2014

    • Bea M.

Ok. How about the spreadable one?

      May 5, 2014

  • carmen

Donna, that is more than enough! Thank you!

    May 5, 2014

  • Kathleen B.

I checked out the spreadsheet and noticed that there are a few menu items not assigned. Like who is doing the chicken dish? Who is getting the bread? Also, did Donna plan on getting enough cupcakes for everyone?

    May 4, 2014

    • Donna G.

I'm planning to supply 48 mini cup cakes ,let me know if you think I need to buy more.

      May 5, 2014

  • Kathleen B.

Yes, I can do the chicken and rice dish, if no one else has signed up for it. Just wanted to check as I'm also doing the meatloaf. They don't take much, but both need to go in the oven for the same amount of time. I'm assuming that both ovens are working? They aren't the fanciest of dishes, but they are filling.

I'll do bread again, or maybe something something else. I'm here to help and I'm open to bringing what's needed.

    May 4, 2014

Kathleen, aren't you doing the chicken dish? No one has volunteered to donate bread yet…

As I mentioned I won't be able to make it but ,I'll drop off the cup cakes at Damo's

I'm planning on being there. I wanted to check, are we still planning on the menu we discussed in April? Chicken with Rice, roasted veggies, meatloaf, bread and cupcakes?

    April 29, 2014

    • carmen

Yes, it is in the body of the announcement. Same exact menu we discussed and agreed on.

Hey everyone, don't forget the upcoming feeding for Sunday, 11 May…I know it is Mother's Day. Also, James was able to get a plumber from Rayne to volunteer/donate time to fix the kitchen sink problem. Thank you James!

Hi Sunil, Thanks for starting the spreadsheet. I've added a sheet to it. I use this whenever I plan a large dinner. it works well for me.

after looking at your spreadsheet for a while, I came up with a crazy idea. how about an online database application that integrates menu planning, inventory status, inventory additions and uses, costing, and other things we dream up. I did this on a large scale decades ago for yale university. I could do it again, scaled down a lot.

Thank you for your crazy idea. I would love to learn that one.

    Hi Volunteers,

It was great meeting you all! As discussed I have created a google spreadsheet which would hopefully help keep track of things better. At bottom of the spreadsheet there are 5 tabs. Please take a look at each tab and give your comments/feedback?

    Google Spreadsheet Location:
    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0ArcD9HbuMb-wdEF6aXRtenFlVEpuWXlGNVNiOEY1M3c&usp=sharing#gid=2

    Note:
For now anyone who has the link can edit the spreadsheet. Once I get email ids from Doma/Carmen, I can restrict permission to specific set of people.

    Thanks
    Sunil & Preethi.

Hello Everyone, We have enough roast chickens. Bea will bring one, Sunil is bringing two and Ha Phan is bringing two….this is plenty and thank you! Cheryl and Kathleen are making mac and cheese. Bea will make treats for the kids. We will also have tangerines and apples that we can put in a bowl for the people to take . Donna will make green salad. Can anyone make dessert? It doesn't have to be fancy, simple is good. We will have carrots and onions, cabbage, eggs so maybe we can cook up something else this Sunday.

I look forward to seeing everyone. I will bring honey baked ham.

    Cheers

    April 7, 2014

Hi All, Yesterday I received whole bunch food. These are what I got, so please shopping accordingly. I have lots of carrots, red onion, apple, tangerines, can foods, cabbages, eggs and an whole turkey. Since, people are donating chicken, I am thinking using that turkey to cook another meal in San Francisco some time soon. Thanks all for your help.

Bea, if you can pick up some treats, that would be great. The center said to call them on Friday to see how many kids will be there. Normally I have counted about 10 kids ranging in different ages from toddler to 10. I will post if I find out how many kids. I think safe to target for 12 children.

    April 6, 2014

    • Bea M.

I thought on about 20. My idea is to prepare some bags with different things inside.

Yum…bread pudding! I will pick up those plastic eggs and fill them with chocolate eggs so that the kids can have a little Easter surprise!

    April 6, 2014

    • Bea M.

I would like to bring some more treats for the kids. How many are rhere? Any suggestions or restrictions?

      April 6, 2014

    • Damo

Last time there were about 18 kids, but it changes all the time. So I don't know how many are there. You can bring whatever, maybe target 18. If there will be more then we finish it. If there will be enough we have other things for them. Thanks.

Previously there was mention of macaroni and cheese. Since I already purchased the items before reading this menu I planned to make enough to feed 16-20 people. I believe Kathleen was going to make the other half enough for 16-20. Hope it's ok to serve with the planned menu?

    April 5, 2014

    • Damo

      Of course, it is OK.

Thank you Cheryl. I have picked up the ingredients for Mac n' cheese so I'm good there. I also had planned on making bread pudding as a dessert.

I'm so happy that I can make it on that date. I will bring a chicken and myself. Looking dorward to see you all.
