Dinner @ San Pedro Fish Market and Sail aboard a Tall Ship to view Fireworks

OVERVIEW:

We will meet for dinner at 4 pm at one of the outdoor seafood markets next to Berth 78.  At 5:30 we will walk over to Berth 78 for a 6 pm boarding and sail aboard one of their two classic tall ships for a cruise along the coast line and the 9pm Long Beach fireworks display.  We return to Berth 78 about 11 pm.

Please do not RSVP until you have purchased your tickets and answer the questions as to purchase and if you will be joining us for dinner.

THE CRUISE

Celebrate July 4th with Los Angeles Maritime Institute (LAMI) and their  tall ship extravaganza. Their two classic tall ships will take us sailing for a great experience on the water!

From 6 pm to 11 pm we will cruise up and down the coastline and view the fireworks which start 9 PM.

While I am not including this as part of our event, LAMI also offers a sail aboard Cannon Battle from 2 - 5 p.m.

This is a family-friendly event. Minors under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Children must weigh at least 70 lbs.

Irving Johnson and      Exy Johnson

Designated the "Official Tall Ships and Maritime Ambassadors of the City of Los Angeles" at their launch in 2002, these 90-foot wooden vessels are charged with giving tens of thousands of young people the opportunity to experience self-discovery, life changing adventure and education found only on a tall ship at sea.

Built to last 100 years, the state-of-the-art brigantine design is based on TopSail founder Jim Gladson's decades of experience with adolescent education and youth sail training programs, years of valuable experience gained from the Institute's first vessel, Swift of Ipswich, and discussions with sail training experts throughout the world.

Purpose-built by the Institute to meet or exceed all U.S. Coast Guard requirements, the brigantines are named in honor of the late Captain Irving and Electa "Exy" Johnson, character-building sail training pioneers and seven-time circumnavigators with youth crew aboard their sailing vessel YANKEE

Wow, what a great meetup. I agree with Charles, it has been the best one I've been to thus far. Thank you John for your great job organizing! It was great meeting everyone there!

I've been to a lot of fun Meetups but this one was one of the best. John is a classy host with great ideas. Please RSVP me for next years tall ships and fireworks trip. I agree that a simple picnic on the ship would be the cherry on top of a spectacular outing.

I thought it was alot of fun and met alot of nice people-enjoyed getting to know some really nice folk-
The fireworks were great and would of liked it to last a bit longer-
Thank you John for putting this together.

I thought it was really a terrific experience -- good company, front row seats to a spectacular show. Next year we should pot luck it as eating at 4 is too early.4
Thank you, John and great connecting with new folks!

This even is among the best Meetup events in all my years as a member. The agreeable company and sailing on the Exy Irving overcompensated for the middling lunch. Ports O' Call was a nearly exotic experience in itself. It didn't feel like the diverse Los Angeles I know. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it and soaked in the ambiance. John, you were the consummate host, as always. Thanks!

Since tickets are sold out, I think I'll join everyone for dinner at 4:00 and then just take my chances I can buy a ticket from a no show. I'm new to the group, how will I recognize the dinner gathering?

I just looked again and you can NOT purchase from your mobile.

      June 19, 2013

    • Charles

@Mona81: On the web page, to the left, in the Date menu dropdown select 'Thurs July 04,[masked]:00PM'. Then, the event options will change dynamically on the page to 'Fireworks from 6:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. $30.00'. It's kind of tricky. Good luck.

Im a student & thats how I got my discount. You may need to check it from a computer and not your phone. I didn't see the breakdown from my phone. But then again, I think availability was limited. Ive had my tickets for about a week or so. Try to call them if you still don't see the discount portion. Good luck!
