Paella Night! 4 Course Prix Fixe Dinner $45 ~ WeHo

UPDATE 6-7 ~ LOBSTER PAELLA! Rabbit/pork paella! This is gonna be good!

I LOVE Paella! Sadly, the best paellas I've had were home cooked. A pretty good one I liked was in Palm Springs, but I just don't go to P.S. anymore. So... let's check out Smoke.Oil.Salt aka SOS, another Adam Fleishman (Umami King) resto.

Four course Paella dinner is $45 and includes:

Choice of Starter
Choice of Medium Plate
Choice of Paella (Traditional Valencian with meat, all seafood or vegetarian)
Choice of Dessert

Optional wine pairing also available.

I'm hosting this event because I am craving a good paella and they only serve the paella on Sundays/Mondays. However, you are welcome to order as you please if you don't feel like paella but want to check out some of their other food. This is NOT a family style meal, so you will please pay for whatever you order plus add about 30% for tax and tip. Please bring cash if possible to make the bill paying easier for everyone.

SOS just opened at the end of April and is located at the former Angeli Cafe location.

The chef here is Perfecto Rocher who was going to be the chef of Taberna Roz y VI in Santa Monica (but had a falling out with the restaurant owner there) so I read about him last year (I live in Santa Monica). He is known for his paella, since he is actually a native of Valencia (which is where paella originates--although you can get it all over in Spain). I was in Spain for 3 weeks last fall, so I am dying to taste a real Valencian paella. I think we are in for a real treat!

Their food porn on their Facebook page looks tantalizing... https://www.facebook.com/smokeoilsalt?ref=stream

Overall the food was ok. My first time having paella. I had the lobster paella, liked the flavor of the lobster. I thought the rice was a bit salty and the portion was small. I could have eaten the whole plate myself :-). Luv the potato like everyone else did. For dessertI was a bit disappointed. The flan was not what I expected, tasted kinda blend. I might come back just for the potatoes.

Thanks Darrell for organizing the event and an adventurous evening!
It was nice seeing and meeting everyone tonight!

Pretty good food. My fav with the spicy potatoes, I preferred the rabbit/pork over the lobster. Cannot share lobster with more than 2 people. Generous sized apps. Skimpy on the rice in the paella. Corkage a little steep at $20/bottle.

I had a blast: great food, wine & company. It doesn't get any better. Thanks to you Darrell; and all the other attendee's who made the night so special and magical.

I'm just having fun with you folks!

Since there are 10 of us that would be 5 paellas... So we should do 1 or 2 of the rabbit paella and 3 or 4 of the lobster paellas. We do want to at least taste the rabbit/pork paella... right?

    • Pat

I'd like to try both but lean toward the lobster.

I LOVE paella; and know the dish well. I'm open to variety, always, but are you serious about rabbit paella? I'd eat rabbit (if you're serious) but I don't see it in the form of paella. Too bad they don't have an ink squid (black) seafood paella (:-

I'll eat pork; but in a paella I'd need to know what kind of pork--there is good, bad and ugly. The seafood/lobster is my first choice by far from the little I know. But since lobster is so expensive (if it's good lobster), it's unlikely there will be a lot--and in a paella, besides saffron rice, you've got to have a bunch of protein. Let's get more details from the server/chef before we commit, don't you think?

    YUMM!

      In Barcelona?

      June 8, 2014

    • Pat

I was in Spain last fall for 3 weeks. I think rabbit is common everywhere--I was in Barcelona, Madrid and Sevilla/Granada. In Barcelona I went to a restaurant specializing in rice dishes that were local to Barcelona (not really paella). I think there was rabbit on the menu. Supposedly paella is better in Madrid than Barcelona BTW, but it originates in Valencia.

I was told that 1 paella is for 2 people, so in order to get the $45 Paella Prix Fixe, 2 people must order the same paella, unless they've changed that information in the last couple of days...

    May 9, 2014

    • Darrell

I suspect everyone will be ordering paella

We are going family style and will order 5 paella for 10 people at the table

Make that Taberna Arroz y Vi--which is still a mashup of Catalan and Spanish for some reason known only to the owner of the restaurant.
