Orphan Thanksgiving Potluck Picnic In The Park ~ Hollywood

  • Nov 22, 2012 · 11:45 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

This event is for all the LA Transplants that don't have family in town or any place to go to share a Thanksgiving meal with family or friends. We got you... LA Foodies can be part of your family. I was always in charge of roasting the turkey or other big piece of protein, but this year, with both my folks now gone, I too am now a Thanksgiving Orphan. So I'll roast up a nice fat turkey or maybe I'll smoke it... Will I do it Asian style with soy/sesame oil or will I prepare it with rosemary and herbs rubbed on the inside and under the skin? You are just gonna have to join us to find out.

Turkey

If you don't have a better offer, join us in giving thanks to everything we do have. And let's share in some happy times, make new friends, become better friends and be thankful we are living in an amazing time.

If you can attend, please comment what you plan to bring in the comment box when you RSVP so we don't get 6 fruitcakes or massive duplication. Side dishes such as sweet potatoes, veggies, salads, mashed potatoes (no box stuff please) and of course desserts are certainly welcome.

What to Bring: Your potluck dish, BYOB favorite beverage, Optional: blanket, frisbee, board game, folding table, camp chairs

All are welcome to attend.

Fantastic Event! Members delivered on their potluck dishes... Special thanks to Mark and Jerry for providing terrific ham and turkey main dishes and Krystyn for going way overboard bringing so many goodies to name a few. Sudha made some amazing samosas and homemade chutney... Wakana and her spring rolls, Diana her sweet yam casserole... etc. So many great side dishes... I didn't get to try them all! Dan from Asian Foodies provided some drum solos for our afternoon entertainment. To create a large buzz... we had unannounced hornets/yellow jackets invade our main course/protein table. Only one reported sting, thankfully. So many desserts and cans of whip cream... Thank you everyone it was a great meal and social event to meet so many new members and great to see so many regulars attend.

If you are volunteering at the Pasadena event, I've volunteered there for Xmas and Tday before and they have TOO many volunteers. Both times, they had about 5000 clients and about 2000 volunteers about 1000 volunteers too many.

      way too many volunteers =-)

Hey Darrell, did you manage to find someone to help you with taking things over to the park? I will be going by bike but might be able to carry something from your place if needed.

    November 21, 2012

    • Darrell

I have the ride covered. I don't have too much stuff, but a bike is no help...

      November 21, 2012

  • Darrell

Looks like an amazing potluck!!! We have TWO turkeys and a ham and tons of desserts. We could use a couple side dishes of mashed potatoes... Also, could use a couple loaves of bread, mustard/mayo to make sandwiches from the ham or turkey. Otherwise, I think we got it covered. Bring folding chairs or table if you got them.

Hi! So here is my finalized list of stuff: large green salad, Roquefort and Italian dressings, bread, 5 pounds baked beans, 5 pounds pasta and spinach salad, cheese platter, plastic utensils, plates, cups, napkins, and a bottle of Veuve Cliquot! Lets eat!
    Warm regards
    Krystyn

    Veggies of some sort.

    November 20, 2012

  • Krystyn L.

I will pick up a pasta salad from the deli...

    November 20, 2012

  • Darrell

If anyone is still undecided about what to bring/make... Both mashed potato dishes backed out so we don't have any signed up at the moment. Jons Market has incredible and huge russet potatoes for only 12 cents a pound! A pasta salad or a potato salad dish would also excellent.

NO MORE DESSERTS PLEASE! WE HAVE 8 DESSERTS SIGNED UP AND CAN USE MORE SIDES/ENTREES.

Have to admit, though, it took a lot to talk myself out of bringing the Baskin-Robbins turkey cake!

Okay, a lot of people are getting very traditional here, so I'll go with green bean casserole. Anyone have tips on keeping food warm?

If someone needs an idea for a dish, no one has volunteered to bring a ham. http://www.superiorgrocers.com has them for about a $1/lb. That's about $8-12 cost... they are fully cooked, so they just need to be warmed up. Yams on sale for 5 lbs/$1 too! Top them with marshmellows or brown sugar and bake them can be yummy.

I may bring some Chinese dim sum unless I leave town.

Hi I will also bring some cupcakes from Crumbs Bakeshop--my favorite place--in addition to the salad and bread from a local bakery. I have some extra paper plates and utensils too...I think a picnic will be real nice. I would bring my dog but she is old and cranky and getting senile...

I would also like to come if it were held inside. Transportation problems prevent me from going to parks.

I'm an orphan too but this year I have already been adopted for Thanksgiving. Hopefully I'll catch up with you on your next meet. Thanks for the invite and have a blast.

I'd totally be down for this, but wish it was indoors. I'm definitely a Thanksgiving Orphan with all my family on "the better side" of the Mississippi river. ;p

    October 25, 2012

  • Krystyn L.

I can also bring some nice fresh bread from the bakery...

This will be great. Now, in all honesty, I am a crappy cook. But, I will bring a large green salad. This I can't ruin. I like mixed greens, carrots, green onions, tomatoes, blue cheese crumbles, and croutons. I will bring Italian dressing and blue cheese dressing. And, a bottle (or two) of champagne!! I hope this will work!!
