South Mtn Park - Moderate Hike

We'll be taking High Shoals Falls Loop Trail which is one of the most popular local trails. If you like water falls you'll definitely want to check this one out. It's a 5 mile loop trail, listed as moderate with a 1245' elevation gain. It does get a bit steep at the top but only for a short distance, and anyone who's ever hiked with me knows we're not going to set any speed records. The payoff is a beautiful 80' waterfall. Should take around 3 hours. Be sure to bring hydration and energy snacks.

A bit rough in spots especially with the wet muddy ground from the snow made the hike slippery in spots.

The down side of being tall is, the ground is so far away

Being short came in really handy for me back in the 70s, but that was a slightly different scenario.

OMG!! My legs. I can't feel my legs. And who took my back?
This hike made me realize what a slug I've been this winter. I'm looking forward to the future hikes.

Forgot to mention, as you drive in there is a visitor center on the right with some interesting displays and rest rooms. So if you get there a little early may want to stop and have a look. THEN DRIVE ALL THE WAY TO THE END OF THE ROAD to the parking lot for the trails.

I changed my RSVP to yes, my mud race got cancelled till August. We're all laughing because its called the Armageddon Ambush race, but they cancelled due to the winter storms and SC earthquake last week.

So in spite of my ignorance I must ask, What's a mud race? Where does one do this? What's the uniform?

      February 15, 2014

    • Jennifer H.

Usually a 5K race but some range from 3 miles-13 miles races that involve 15-25 obstacles, mud, water pits, gladiators, zombie, anything to make it a challenging and fun race
