Paddle the Catawba from Bridgewater Dam to Judge's Restaurant

Paddle the Catawba River From Bridgewater Dam to Judges Restaurant in Morganton.  We've always had a lot of fun and great scenery on this paddle.  A couple of members from another group were with us and showed us their rolling techniques.  Maybe they'll do it again.  (hint-hint Phillip and Dan)

We launch about an 2 hours after they open the flood gates so there's enough water to paddle and we don't get in front of the flow.  While it's moving water, it's very timid, only a class 1.  There is a couple places along the way and at the beginning where one can practice eddying, ferrying, or surfing.

There is a short portage around a low head dam.  Bring drinks and snacks or lunch.  We will stop along the way for a break and swim.  Bring a camera.

Meet at dam launch park to shuttle.  Shuttles to leave from Judges at 1030.  So meet at Powerhouse Park and drop off your boat before hand to give yourself enough time to get to Judges.  Drivers only will take vehicles to Judges.  From Judges all drivers will shuttle back to Powerhouse. Those with high capacity vehicles, if you can, please be shuttlers.

After the paddle, those interested, stay and have lunch / dinner at Judges.

Ha.. I thought I was the only one who got whipped by the mighty Catawba..Good to hear you young'uns were tired too. I think the cool air had something to do with it because I'm sure it wasn't the two glasses of wine!! I want to thank all who were so patient and helpful with us fledgling inexperienced kayakers. What a great and diversified group..

Nothing on this stretch should cause a swim- unless you want to!

Got up early to chip the ice off the bows of my boats. 35 degrees, almost June.... ridiculous. I wonder how Florida is this time of year!?

Hey gang, for those interested in a doing a shorter/easier paddle we are offering an option of putting in at Watermill Bridge. This is class 1- water with a distance of 4.5 miles. For those interested, meet at Judges between 12:15 - 12:30. We will leave vehicles there and shuttle boats/people to the put in. Hopefully we can meet up with the other members of our group at that point. I can transport a max of (6) people and boats so if there are more people I will need assistance from another shuttle person. Please let me know if you are interested in this option.

Matt will talk to my friends to see what they want to do. They have trailer and 3 kayaks but are novices - like me. The upper part may be too much for them although I did survive the lower Green and was clueless...Will post tomorrow night. Connie

OK So I will be meeting Matt at Judges with my two friends Debbie and Bill. Never used these kayaks before and not sure of skill level, so the shorter run for us will be great.

  • Connie

OK So haven't done this before and not sure where to meet to drop off kayaks. Will the gps bring me where I want to be if I put in 5790 Powerhouse road? So we have a trailer and 3 various size kayaks. Drop them off at powerhouse road and bring trailer and truck to Judges??? Think I'll call Ray......

We may be able to borrow a canoe and go, if you think it would be deep enough to get through.

    • Ray W.

Hey Judy. Since we wait for the dam release water level is never a problem here. Just good swift water with some small rapids to bounce through. One of our guys took his 14 canoe last year. Be sure to have vests (pfd) on you.
