Hike Coontree Loop to Bennett Gap

The following link will take you to a really good description of this hike. http://internetbrothers.org/2011/04/24/coontree-loop-to-bennett-gap-pisgah-national-forest/

Hike Length: 6.6 miles
Hike Duration: 3.5 hours Hike Rating: Moderate
Elevation Gain: 1200 feet Hike Configuration: Loop and connector
Trail Condition: Good, some creek crossings
Starting Point: Across Scenic Highway 276 from the Coontree Picnic Area.
How to Get There: From Brevard, NC take Hwy. 276 into Pisgah National Forest. Go 4.8 miles from the forest entrance to the Coontree Picnic Area parking. Cross the road to the trailhead.

Ray has agreed to manage the carpool from Hickory - Meet up is at the Sears parking at the Catawba Valley Mall at 8:45. Leaving at 9am sharp, as there will be another carpool to sync up with in Morganton. The Morganton carpool will meet at Lowe's at 9:15 and we will leave out at 9:30. That should put us at the trail head around 11 or so. While the website says 3.5 hours, we will be stopping to take pictures, enjoy the scenery and fuel u so it may take us more time, around 4 to 4.5 hours. We should be back on the road around 4pm and back in Hickory around 6:30, so this will be an all day event.

There are a few creek crossings, put the write-up says there are either logs or rocks that can be used to make the crossings. Hopefully, we will have time to get in a view of Looking Glass Falls, which is right off Hwy 276.

David, I have a small "older" apt on Topsail Island. May be renting it to folks I know in the near future - reasonable of course. Brought you back some clams but I ate them :)

Good to know as I know someone, (me), who would be perfect for renting from time to time. I'll just have to dig my own clams i guess

Based on the recommendation of a Forest Ranger we took a different set of trails. Cat Gap & John Rock. Moderate-to-Strenuous, we spent about 5 1/2 hours on the trails and got a great view of Looking Glass. We definitely need to make return trips to this area!!
