Catawba Falls, Old Fort. Easy to Moderate Hike

  • Apr 12, 2014 · 9:15 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

The Catawba Falls near Old Fort should be a nice day trip and is said to be perfect for families (and pets). NOTE: There are some creek crossing so be prepared to get your feet wet. Good idea to bring a change of shoes & socks.

It's listed as a 1 1/2 mile trail out & back (3 miles total) with a 650 elevation gain. Listed as moderate difficulty due to some creek crossing, etc.

Taking time to enjoy the scenery and take some pictures we should spend about 3 hours on the trail. That should be a very leisure pace.

After the hike we can make a short 15 minute drive to Andrews Geyser for a picnic, eating around 2:30. So pack a lunch! Estimating we will be back in Hickory around 4:30.

Coordinates to the trail head are:[masked],[masked]

Carpools:
Those wanting to carpool from Hickory meet at the Sears lower level parking at the Valley Hills Mall at 9:15, leaving at 9:30.

Those wanting to carpool from Morganton meet at Lowes Hardware (next to Bojangles) I-40 exit 103 at 10:00. We will all meet up and leave at 10:15.

Shooting for being on the trail at around 11:00.

Ray, R U stopping in Morganton? Looks like I'm the only one going from. Surprised we don't have more people going on this hike. Fairly easy, pretty scenery, great weather... they'll be missed

Yes, we'll stop in M'ton as planned. A bit surprised myself.

I've been told by two reliable sources... ok, make that one reliable source and the Rat, that it's very easy to find. Use the coordinates[masked],[masked], NOT the map that pops up if you click Catawba Falls.

Thanks Keith. It's been a little better than a year since i was there. After the storms & flooding last year there was a lot of damage & the bridge was washed out so one couldn't park at the interpretive center. I had met a couple of rangers on the trail & they told me there were improvements in the works so it sounds like they've fixed things up. Cool

You only need to cross the river twice. The first spot has a wooden foot bridge and the other has large rocks to skip across. I took 16 Boy Scouts on this hike last year and no wet feet. Directions are very simple. From Hickory take I 40 to Old Fort Exit 73 turn left look for access road on right. Follow Catawba River Road until it dead ends into the parking lot at the trail head.

Thanks David & Keith for the info. I've never been to these falls and only had some write-ups on websites to go by. One indicated there had been some recent improvements to make the creek crossings easier. I'm going to err to the side of caution and still be prepared for wet feet, but hopefully it wont be necessary. Thanks again for the input!

This is a nice hike. One must cross over a creek a couple times so make sure to wear waterproof boots or like Tevas is what I wore.

To get accurate directions to the trail head copy and paste the coordinates[masked],[masked] . If you click on "Catawba Falls" it will send you to Old Fort but not the trail head.
