Yokohama Beach to Makaha.

Aloha Paddlers!!

Our trip around Kaena Pt. on Sept. 7  went really well with soft breezes pushing us to the point, and very little wind at all once we rounded it to head to Yokohama.  We had a bit of excitement at the beginning when a couple of our courageous paddlers attempted to "Storm the Gates!!"  (tried to punch out though a set of waves when we started - the wave won....... :)  but they enjoyed the adventure of it!)  For the rest of the paddle we had great conditions which made the paddle a pleasure from start to finish!

Our next paddle is this coming Sunday, Sept. 22, and this time we’ll be paddling from Yokohama Beach Park to Makaha Beach Park which is only a 6 mile paddle.  At this point the surf forecast is for 1-2 foot wave faces on the West side, so we we should have an easy time launching and landing.

The weather forecast is looking great with winds forecast to be perfect with trades at 10-20 MPH, which means they'll average around 15 MPH  - good for a leisurely paddle.

As always, know your capabilities, limits, the conditions and check your equipment before you go. Sun Screen, hat and water are a must. Sun glasses, gloves and dry bag are a good idea. Remember to stay in sight of the group and tell others if you are leaving. You alone are responsible for your health and safety. To check conditions, go to:http://www.surfnewsnetwork.com/and check the surf and wind forecast to see what it’s saying at that time. Then, knowing the latest forecast, we can all make the decision about whether to come out for this paddle or to go for a paddle somewhere else, or stay home and clean the yard. Be sure to check the Meetup – Hua Iki site for any changes and updates and to change your RSVP if you change your mind.

The paddle should take about 2 to 2 ½  hours(depending on the wind), which will leave as much time as we want for surfing the breaks along the way or at Makaha when we come in, so bring your best surfing/paddling kayak and we’ll have some fun at the end of the paddle!----provided the surf zone isn’t too crowded if there are waves.

So, here’s the plan – the paddle is this coming Sunday the 22nd and we’ll be meeting at Yokohama Beach Park at 8:00 AM, the shuttle drivers will leave at 8:20 and we’ll start the paddle around 9:00 AM.  That should put us into MAKAHA at around 10:30 and we’ll play in the waves till we get tired of it, conditions permitting.

It should be a fun paddle, depending on the wind, so I’ll look forward to seeing you all there!

See you Saturday!

Hellow again Amy, I thought I had posted a few sentences in reply to your question that said if conditions were right this paddle would have been fine for a first timer. Unfortunately, I didn't double check it and I see that most of my post didn't post!!! Oops, would have enjoyed having you with us today, but, we'll be doing more paddles that will have 1/2 way stops which would also work well for you. Hope to see you on them soon!

Conditions were great with nearly no shorebreak and lnearly no winds for most of the paddle but occasional 15 MPH winds blowing offshore. Water was the usual crystal clear that the Waianae coast nearly always is so Jeff just had to jump off his kayak for a short snorkeling session about 1/2 way through. All in all a good paddle. If you'd like to see some pics of it, go the the photo album of Yokohama to Makaha 2013 and have a look!
