Kualoa Park (Chinaman's Hat) to Kahana Bay and up Kahana River. 6 Miles + 2. - Aloha Paddlers!! - PLEASE SEE NOTES BELOW!! We’ll be paddling from Kualoa Beach Park (extreme north end of Kaneohe Bay) up the east side of the island inside the reef past beautiful Ka a'awa valley to Kahana Bay. At the entrance of Kahana Bay, is an ancient fishpond where we'll take a break and learn some history of the area and the fishpond. At Ka a'awa Valley, there is a great little surf spot where we can catch small to medium size waves, so it’ll be a good spot to spend a bit of time polishing up on all of our surf skills and having some fun. So, as for trip details……………….. Kualoa Park To Kahana Valley, up Kahana River. It's 6.1 miles to Kahana, about 1.5 miles up the stream and back for a total paddling distance of 7.6 miles. We'll meet Morning at 8 AM at Kualoa Beach Park in the parking lot near the first restroom building. Shuttle cars to Kahana will leave at 8:20 AM, and we’ll paddle away from the beach about 9 AM. We should finish up at between noon and 2:30 PM. This is a VERY scenic paddle with lots of interesting history, so I’ll look forward to seeing you all there!

Kahana Bay to Malaekahana Bay – 9.6 miles - Halfway: Kokololio Beach (6.0) or Hau'ula Beach (5.0)

Time for another paddle, and the routes just keep getting better as we go north along the windward side of Oahu!

This outing we’ll be paddling from Kahana Bay to Malaekahana which is about 9.5 miles so around 3 ½ hours paddling time if you do the entire route...... but if you're not used to a long paddle like this, you can plan to do just 1/2 the distance and take out at Hauula which will be far more pleasant for our newcomers. This will also be our ½ way stop to relax a bit and stretch our legs.

For this trip, we’ll paddle out of scenic Kahana Bay, and stay inside the reef just over 4 miles to Hauula where we’ll take a break. At this point, we have a nice channel through which we can get out to sea. Once outside the reef, we’ll turn north and go up the coast. From there it’s another 4.8 miles to Goat Island, which has a jagged outer shelf made of razor sharp rocks, but a nice fantasy-like little crescent shaped sandy beach on the inside of the island that you could imagine being the scene of a castaway island in some movie.

This beach and Islet is a great little place and a wonderful spot to “get away from the crowd”. Back in the day, the shoreline inside this island was the most popular nude beach on Oahu – alas no more.

Again, For those in our group who haven’t paddled this distance and aren’t sure they want to do nine miles, this route offers two other options.

You could do the 1st ½ of the paddle inside the reef and take out at Hauula for a 4 mile paddle, or you could start in Hauula when the group finishes its “break-time”, and do the open-ocean segment ending at Malaekahana State Park just inside of Goat Island for a 4.8 mile paddle.

So, here’s the plan…….. Meet at Kahana Bay camp ground, 2nd turn out after the bridge going north in the camping area. Shuttle cars leave 8:20 to move vehicles to Malaekahana, or Hauula depending on where you plan to end your paddle. We should arrive at Hauula Beach Park for ½ way stop between 10:30 and 11:00 if you plan to join us there. We should Arrive at Goat Island (Malaekahana) between 12:30 and 1:30 PM. We'll Explore a bit, stretch our legs a bit and depart for the beach (200 yards away) at our leisure. We look forward to seeing you all there!

Malaekahana Bay to Turtle Bay – 7.5 miles. - Aloha gang! Our schedule has us paddling along the northern most tip of the Windward (east) side of the island, and takes us around Kahuku Point, into Turtle Bay on the North shore. It's important for us to get around the North and West sides of the Island during the summertime so as not to deal with the big surf in these areas in the late fall and winter. This is a great paddle which will start at Mālaekahana State Recreation Area, at Malaekahana Bay, 2 miles north of the Polynesian Cultural Center. After the put-in, we’ll proceed immediately outside the reef and turn north to paddle the 7.5 miles to Turtle Bay. We’ll be passing really secluded stretches of shoreline with nice beaches, including one nude beach (if you want to stop there for a break, there may be entertainment provided), and then into the 2 mile rocky, desolate section going around Kahuku point. If the surf permits, we’ll paddle into the cove at Turtle Bay Resort and invade the cove for a swim before we paddle the final ½ mile around the point into Turtle Bay to land on its secluded white sand beaches. This is a 7.5 mile paddle that can be very pleasant in good conditions but a real challenge if the wind is over 20 MPH or if a large North or East swell is running (which would be unusual this time of year). So, if you have questions about whether you should go on this one if the conditions are challenging, I'd suggest that everyone call the National Weather (973-4380 ext. 2 for wind ) and surf (ext. 3) reports before you leave home to see if you're within your comfort and safety zone. So, we’ll meet at Mālaekahana State Recreation Area, Malaekahana Bay at 8:00 AM. Shuttle cars will leave at 8:20 to park at Turtle Bay, with the paddlers leaving the beach at 9:15 AM. We can figure on about a 3-4 hour paddle so with our ½ way stop, we’ll most likely finish up around 12:30 to 1:30 PM. Regarding a place to park the shuttle cars at the take out, we’ll have two choices. Our normal parking spot is at the horse barns behind the golf course pro shop (but sometimes they won’t let us park there). we might want to check out the parking close to the Turtle Bay cove, which would make it a bit of a shorter paddle with showers at the end, but if the swell is too large, we may not be able to get in the mouth of the cove. We can discuss and decide that morning. Another great day on the water!

Turtle Bay to Waimea Bay – 7.0 miles. - We’ll be starting at Turtle Bay, and ending at Waimea Bay with a ½ way rest point at Sunset Beach. This is always one of our most enjoyable paddles because it’s only 7 miles, which is about 2 1/2 hours of paddling at the pace the group moves, it’s usually with the wind, which makes the paddling much easier, and this section of the North Shore has great beaches and scenery. If surf permits we go into Kawela Bay, which is a pretty, secluded little bay just North of Turtle Bay. Given the distance and fact that the wind is at our backs, it’s a great paddle for first timers with the club, so we usually have a good turn-out on this paddle. You can also elect to do ½ the route and paddle from Turtle Bay to Sunset Beach (4 miles), or from Sunset Beach to Waimea Bay(3 miles). I think this route is a natural to do a short bit of snorkeling at Sharks cove just before Waimea Bay. The bottom here has some great coral and rock features with lots of fish and turtles in the area. So, if you’re up for it, bring along your mask and fins and you can snorkel the sharks cove area after the paddle. So, here’s the plan…..Meet at the Turtle bay Stables (first left after the guard shack, then stay to the right and follow the dirt road out to the stables) at 8:00 AM to off-load kayaks. Cars leaving Turtle Bay and going to the finish point for the shuttle will be leaving at 8:20. We’ll plan on putting in for the paddle at 9:00 to 9:15 AM and finishing up at noon at Waimea Bay.
