Utility plants

For this meetup we will take Nick Spero's lead and will be going over making cordage from plan fiber and making friction fire with a bow drill. Dogbane and Milkweed will be our primary plants for the cordage and I will try to collect some stinging nettle also. I have a couple bow drill sets that I will bring. If you are interested in bringing material to make one please contact me and I will instruct you on what and where to get stuff. Tinder will be provided for the bow drill session. If you are able to catch the tinder you have succeed in primitive fire making skills. We will meet at Oregon Ridge by the lake. This area has been chosen because there are outdoor grills there for us to toss the fire into when finished. We may not be able to identify all the plants being used for these workshops, but we will see them again and again on future outings.

Sorry I missed this. Any chance of a similar one? I'm out Frederick way if you ever want help planning events in this neck of the woods.

Because it is a bit chilly for cordage we are meeting in the nature center. Follow signs.

Two great lessons to learn and lots of fine people to enjoy ... but is my problem of living too far south and another reason which causes me to not come this time ... you all have fun at what will certainly be a wonderful event. Enjoy.

Count me in! I have a particular interest in amateur pyromania, having spent many years instructing many young men in the ways of controlled combustion (with various degrees of success) ;-)
