Natural Plant Dyes Workshop Series

Join us as we delve deeper into plant appreciation, this time the focus is on natural dyes. We will have eight sessions throughout the seasons, exploring different plants, colors, techniques and mordants. Not only will we be doing some dyeing, we will be learning about each plant's history, uses, native origin, botany, identification, etc. We might get into a little henna or body art with some of the colors or material. I hope to provide an edible from the plants we use in each session, no promise though. These sessions will be hands on with each participant taking home what they have dyed that day. On the last session we will meet and do a craft with all the colors we made through the year. How cool is that? Some craft ideas are a pot holder, rag rug, jewelry, etc. Chime in with more ideas. Also, if you are in possession of a particular skill you think could apply to some or any of this please check in and lets do some planning.

Plant material, mordants and gloves will be provided. Participants are asked to bring their own material to dye. Suggested materials are white/un-bleached old t-shirts, pillowcase or yarn made of cotton, wool, bamboo or hemp. Don't worry if you can not attend all sessions, we're hoping to have a voluntary material swap on craft day, so be sure to make friends.

Please let me know if you would like to help in the harvesting or are able to bring some plant material with you. As the date gets closer I will post what plants we will be using and colors to be dyed.

Any chance you can post a photo of the part of the dandelion root you've use for the dye? I'd like to try at home!

We're about to go and get set up. Bringing a baby pool for the kids to splash around in. Might fry up some maple seeds!

Paige-We'll bring Everett this time. Maybe the kids need a splash pool or some other entertainment. Your thoughts?

So hey folks! This time we will be dying with dandelion root in hopes of a magenta color. We'll need to soak our fabrics in water with a touch of alum overnight. Alum is in the spice aisle of the grocery store, and looks like a can of baking powder. The grocery clerks don't know it is there though, so don't bother asking. Please let me know if you can't find it, and we'll figure out a way to get you some.
