Fall Foraging with Ron Fischer

You may not sign up for this foraging class if you signed up for the Spring foraging class - foraging classes have limited class space so that participants can actually hear and see what is going on and we're limiting participation to one class/member.

Ron Fischer will lead us on a wonderful Fall morning identification and foraging adventure!

Ron is an experienced forager who has been foraging since he was 18. Initially inspired by reading Euell Gibbon's book 'Stalking the Wild Asparagus', Ron has spent the last 25 years learning, locating, identifying, and eating!

Ron will bring plant samples to show, touch, and taste. Plants likely to be covered include dandelion, burdock, amaranth, lambs quarters, dock, and plantain. You'll learn positive identification and some cooking methods and suggestions. An outdoor plant walk will end the teaching portion of Ron's class.

Ron is good friends with the Howenstine family, the proprietors of Pioneer Tree Farm. Pioneer Tree Farm is an organic Christmas tree farm and our group's favorite location for classes.

Please dress appropriately for the weather and for outdoors activity. Class will be held regardless of the weather.

Please consider bringing something to share during our traditional post-class potluck mingle & buffet. We'll provide the plates, cups, and silverware - you bring the food and talk.

Very fun to have Ron share his favorite fall foraging plants with us - as well as his knowledge and enthusiasm. Thanks, Ron!

Thank you very much :) - I had a wonderful time learning - I also appreciated the wonderful hospitality Pioneer Tree Farm provided - and I for one would have paid much more than $3 for this wonderful education.

I just looked up the directions for this. I am going to end up being late. It is further away than I thought. My cell is[masked]-0743. Can someone attending call me. That way I have a number to call when I arrive. So, I can find the group when I get there. Hopefully someone gets this message. Otherwise I may end up wandering aimlessly. Oh, we'll. let's see how this turns out.

    Cathy,
Does the room have an outlet to plug in a little crock pot for hot dip?

For some reason I'm not taken to a link to pay the $3.00
    Suggestions?

    September 18, 2013

Leslie, the class is full at the moment - you need to rsvp yes to be added to the waiting list. If and when a spot opens everyone on the list is notified and the first person to grab and pay for the spot gets it. hth.

Oh no! I RSVP'd right away, than had to go out of town, and have been trying to pay. I guess I messed up...thanks for letting me know.

I changed the settings to allow a waiting list. You can be added to the waiting list if you chose.

Cathy, I have registered for this class, and paid the fee, but now find I cannot attend. Please make my spot available to another. Can the $3.00 be applied to another class? I am interested in the October class on making ointments & lotions. Pat Bieber

Mary, I am hoping you did not mean to rsvp that way - you need to use the 'your rsvp' button in the upper right hand corner to rsvp.

Didn't note this on my initiation page...I have many mushrooms growing on my quiet, wooded property...interested in what can be harvested. I am skeptical about identification of edible varieties and would appreciate educational guidance.

Shirley, you could bring a few samples with you or invite the group to your place for a meet up.

I am hoping to go, I have not seen you in a while, and am very interested in mushroom identification.

Would anyone be able to give me a ride from Chicago (Edgewater)?

    August 25, 2013

    • Cathy C.

Kristin, I would be able to pick you up at the crystal lake metro station if you want to ride that way.
