Structuring Your Story

National Novel Writing Month is in NOVEMBER!

To celebrate, this meeting we will discuss the loved AND hated formal story structure. Some say this robs the writer of all creativity - but does it? What exactly is the "proper" way to structure a story anyway? What is a "Three Act Structure" and how can I get one?

We will have a presentation with an open discussion at the end on this one.

Some people had questions on constructing dialogue; following is a link on this topic. The website is specific to screenplays, but screenplays are the best way to learn to write good dialogue:

Good info came out of the meeting last night. Thanks Gio for all of the hard work that you put in. The graphic that you used to illustrate the 3 acts was especially helpful.

Great Job as always Gio! Now that you have the new baby you might consider adjunct professorial work at one of the local colleges on writing. You get to help other writers and make some more money for the diapers and food! LOL

Bio..it was really great to finally meet you and the group. Your insights tonight was very well received and I actually think I can now try to formulate the concept I have in my head. Congrats again on the baby!!!

Am very saddened to hear you won't be hosting the meeting any longer, but I understand totally. Take care!

I was in Santa Fe, NM, for 5 days last weekend and just got back, and I am jet lagged so I will not be participating in the group this week. I look forward to meeting you next month. Thanks.

Please bring some folding chairs if you can. We have 32 saying they are coming and only 20 chairs. Some don't show up but I'd hate for people to have to sit on the floor. Thanks.

Two resources that I found to be helpful:

http://www.book-editing.com/ -- if you're looking for an editor, this is a great site. You can get a price quote & sample edit from several editors & select the most suitable.

Editor-Proof Your Writing by Don McNair is a very helpful book. By the way, Don McNair is one of the editors in the above mentioned association - http://www.book-editing.com/

    Hope this helps.

A year ago we attended a Tom Bird Seminar (write your publishable book in a weekend). Most people in that group (including Robert) managed to write a "book" in that time frame. I did not. Here is a link to a free Tom Bird lecture that might interest you: "Tom Bird - Write your Book in a Weekend Lecture": http://tombird.com/sedona-lecture-stream/
    Keep writing everyone.

My award-winning teacher and author friend Alan Sitomer (www.AlanSitomer.com) just launched a new venture called The Writer's Success Academy; his aim is to give back.
http://writersuccess.com/ Alan told me: “Since so many aspiring writers seek me out for advice on how to break in, get an agent, write a book (or book proposal), and so on, I decided to build this website and give the content away free as a way of, well... giving back. (The teacher in me, I guess.) Truth is I've always wanted to write a book on writing that includes thoughts on craft as well as business. Posting it on the web at no charge gives me the chance to make this a living, breathing, growing resource. In a publishing world that has changed, I find this to be a very cool way to offer up what I myself never had access to during all the years I was trying to break in."

Here is a great article I found on character building. It is tailored to screenwriters, but any writer can benefit from reading this to get better at character development and dialogue:

I would rather wait for when you (group leaders) can attend. Sometimes things happen and that's okay. I will be out town next week so I will meet everyone the first week in November. :-)

I feel this is one of the most important meetings we will ever have. Story structure is important even in "reality TV", so I feel this will be a great discussion whether you write poetry, fiction, nonfiction, memoir, or plays. I look forward to seeing everyone there!
