Lets Swing at Club Morocco

The UpStage Theatre season ends with their Summer Musical, and this one’s a doozy! Club Morocco is a high-flying, swing-music musical; a celebration of the sounds and styles of a bygone era; a live film noir with gangsters and gumshoes, ballads and blues, hot jazz, and high-kicking hoofers.

Conceived, Created and Written by Jon Huffman & Barbara F. Cullen
Musical Arrangements by Ashton Wolf
Directed by Sean K. Thompson
Music direction by Joseph Slusser

CLUB MOROCCO:

“…An oasis of smooth in a jagged town of broken dreams…where the swing is red-hot, the beauty dangerous, and the luck as fleeting as the love.”

CLUB MOROCCO:

Where Zoot-suited bandleader Chick Valentine brings the heat every night with his onstage band, The Swing Street All-Stars. A motley crew of “killers, grifters, con-men and thieves”, the All-Stars are “the hottest bunch of hep-cats around”, who work their horns “like there’s nothing left to lose.”

CLUB MOROCCO:

Featuring its regular cast of singers and dancers, including dashing tenor, Bobby LaRue; the headliner/diva, Miss Velvet St. Regis; and the tap-dancing brothers, Butch and Slick Wannabe.

CLUB MOROCCO:

Whose owner, gangster Torch Tangier, just wants to make his audience “forget about the world outside—tonight, the only world that exists is right here—at The Club Morocco.”

CLUB MOROCCO:

Where the only fly in the ointment is hard-boiled private eye, Frank McCann. Harboring a terrible secret, he’s returned, for one last night—to exact revenge, seek redemption, and maybe, if he’s lucky, rekindle a lost flame. Too bad for him, love-shy torch-singer Nugget Rialto, has ideas of her own.

it was a nice evening. fun to see the heights full of folks enjoying white linen night. the play itself was not really a play; more a cabaret show. the music was good, the singing ok, and it was fun to watch the audience participate.

the plan is to meet for dinner at 5:30. around 7:15 we will drive over to the theater and park. at 7:30, we will meet in the lobby and find the other members of the group. then we will go in and find seats together - it's general admission, and i don't know how crowded it will be.

for those who don't know me, i will be wearing silver and gold mardi gras beads.

you asked for dinner - you get dinner!

we will meet at 5:30 pm at Dry Creek. 544 Yale St. Houston, Tx 77007 Tel:[masked]

    http://www.drycreekcafe.com/menus/dc_dinner.pdf

It is only 1.5 miles from Lambert Hall. We will have plenty of time to eat, drive over there, and get our seats for the show.

This place is BYOB, but i was told they will have some beer as Saturday is White Linen Day in the heights.

For those who are interested in carpooling, we will meet at the commuter parking area of the First Colony AMC theater at 4:45 pm. We will wait for about 5 minutes, then leave, so we can be sure to arrive at the restaurant in a timely fashion. Please indicate if you will be meeting us for the carpool.

Please respond, and indicate if you will be joining us for dinner. I will update later with the number who will attend. Then, whoever gets there first can get a table for the "swing party". lol.

    See you Saturday.

DON'T FORGET YOUR GROUPON FOR THE SHOW!!
