Shotokan karate, running, German longsword
I've been training with the longsword for about five years and always eager to learn more.
Forte Swordplay has an approach to studying the longsword that appeals to me. It's an iterative combination of scholarship and practical application. The medieval and renaissance texts are studied and the techniques tested at speed to gain insights into their application. As we learn more, previous understandings and interpretations are modified and updated. It's an evolutionary process. My appreciation of the sophistication and skill of the medieval swordsmen is constantly growing. Forte Swordplay emphasizes safety and they have developed their own training weapons - such as daggers with internal springs to act as shock absorbers - to allow for safe full-speed practice. While the focus is on the German style this is supplemented through studying other traditions as well, such as Italian and English. Visits with groups practicing these other traditions are part of the study at Forte Swordplay.
