series of meetings: "Caring for the future: food for thought"

  • Needs a date

  • The Bell

  • Perhaps the most compelling motivation for 'forward thinking' is that we care about the future - on a personal, community and/or global level. It's a new year and issues such as social and environmental justice, sustainable living, economic and ecological balance, personal fulfillment, and many others, seem to be more relevant than ever. I'm proposing a series of meetings to look at different areas, and to have a focus provided by members and invited guests who are active or interested in organisations working towards better ways of doing things. I can think of a few friends and organisations that would make a good starting point, but would also be very interested in any ideas or suggestions you might have, especially if there's something you're involved in, on any level, which you think might be of interest to the group.

My suggested format would be to have part of each meeting for general socialising and discussion, and then have maybe 20 mins or so on a general topic or specific organisation where a focus person can introduce their ideas, activities and/or objectives, and then open this up for further discussion. I'm happy to invite some friends along to discuss aspects of their work but it would be nice to have at least some initial indication of potential interest before I go to them.

Meetings could be at any suitable venue in the general Bristol/Bath area.

So how does it sound? interested in hearing about initiatives in various areas from people involved in them? any groups in mind that you would like to speak for or hear from? please indicate your interest by signing up and we'll take it from there :)

    Happy New Year to all,

    Neil

    Hi Neil

    • Neil

Hi Jane, I'm going to try to organise something in March and/or April

      February 6

    • Jane

Great I'll look out for your post

      February 7

  • Rachel M.

    Hi Neil
Have you got a date yet?
    Rachel

    October 6

    • Neil

Hi Rachel, we had one meeting on this topic back in July but I'm hoping to organise some more before long, my own timetable is pretty full for the next couple of months but I'll see what I can do!

      October 6

  • Ruth W.

I was hoping to come but have to go to a meeting. Shame, hope it's a good discussion though and looking forward to joining you next time.

Cant make this meeting but hope to get to the next ones

    August 14

  • Neil

Note that, as discussed, I've scheduled a Meetup (listed separately from this thread) for this evening in Bath. In case any of you who haven't signed up for that one can make it, it would be great to have you along :)

  • Sal

Hi Neil I love the sound of this group. Sounds very thought provoking and would love to join you at a meeting soon. Do you hold any in the Bristol area. Look forward to watch this space.
    Keep well Sal :)

    July 18

    • Neil

Hi Sal, yes will see if I can find a date to hold something in Bristol next month, or failing that some other time soon :)

      July 26

  • Robin

26 July in the evening is good for me.

    July 17

  • Jennifer

Sunday afternoon/evening would be fine for me, Neil.

    July 17

  • Geoff P.

I'm afraid I can't make that weekend, Neil, as we'll be at WOMAD.

    July 17

  • Neil

I'm thinking of scheduling this meetup for sometime that weekend 25/26 July - by default I'd maybe aim for late Sunday afternoon/early Sunday evening (the Bell has live music on Sunday lunchtime so maybe after that)... anyway if you have preferences for timing please add them as comments below so I can take them into account :)

    July 17

  • Jennifer

Thanks, Neil. 25/26 July is good for me. Do other people want to meet up before that as well? I could if anyone else would like to. Jennifer

    June 16, 2015

  • Jennifer

How about Tuesday 23rd June? 7.00pm? We could discuss which aspects of society we think need improving the most - that might give us a topic for the next meeting. Or does anyone else have an idea?

    June 15, 2015

    • Neil

I think that type of discussion - to lead into others - makes a lot of sense Jennifer. Personally I'm quite busy for a while and the first weekend I could come to Bath would be that of 25/26th July, however I don't want to be a constraint so if a few of you can agree on a date before then I can set the date and/or give you assistant organiser access so you can set up the details yourself, cheers all, Neil

      June 15, 2015

  • Geoff P.

I'm afraid I'll be down on Pilton Farm that week with[masked] other revellers watching Dave Grohl singing in a cast. I'll be caring for the future, by not leaving a trace...;-)

    June 15, 2015

  • Geoff P.

Well, The Bell sounds like it's THE place to meet up. Works for me, too.

    June 15, 2015

  • Jennifer

The Bell would be great for me too but not on a Wednesday please - too much happens on Wednesdays already! Could we choose a date and a topic and meet up soon?

    June 15, 2015

  • Dawn S.

This group sounds really interesting. The Bell would be a great place to meet up. Hope it works out!

    June 15, 2015

  • Geoff P.

The Bell, Walcot Street would be great for me, too.

Hi to those who are following this thread... just a 'heads up' that I'm hoping to have a meeting on this topic on the weekend of the early May bank holiday - I realise that some people would be away but I'm planning on being in Bristol that weekend and just thought to get started. So is there anyone who would be interested who would have a preference between Sunday 3rd May or Monday 4th? I'm flexible on venue - thinking central Bristol is probably easier for more people but could make it central Bath if that turns out to work better

    March 31, 2015

    • Phil C.

Hi Neil, I'd be interested. Mon 4th in Bristol would suit me best.

Hi Lorri, I'm actually in the process of moving to Devon myself (Totnes) - house completes next month - but once that move is done I'm aiming to organise some meetups in Bristol/Bath as I'll be spending time there quite often. I'd be happy to consider other locations (e.g. in Devon!) as well if there's enough interest...

    February 13, 2015

  • Lorri

Hi I'm in Devon so might not be able to attend every time. However, wondered if anyone in this group is still meeting up? Sounds right up my street! 😀

    February 13, 2015

  • Chris

The Bell, Walcot Street would be great for me :) If there is any chance of a meet before about 15/01/2014 I would be happy to give an off the cuff talk and show a few pics etc. My family is from Bath, I lived in Beckington for a few years then emigrated to New Zealand. I have started a yachts based charity in the South West Pacific and consider I am "living my purpose" and making a positive difference for the planet and at least some of it's people. I do not usually do this but thought I would put myself out there in case there is interest :)

Enjoy discussing key issues of the day. Idea of the group appeals . Look forward to hearing when the group will meet

OK, I'll cycle over from Bristol to Bath for 2pm on Saturday. Anyone else fancy joining me for the ride?

    November 29, 2012

  • Neil

shall we go for the Bell then at say 2pm?

    November 28, 2012

    • Nicola B

      Sounds good to me.

      November 29, 2012

  • Susan

I can make 1st December also

    November 21, 2012

  • Neil

I'm actually staying in bath for the next ten days or so, so maybe we could organise something informal for this coming saturday or the one after? (24th or 1st)

    November 21, 2012

  • Clare H.

Bath on a Saturday afternoon sounds good to me- any ideas as to
a venue? Clare - sorry no photo yet!

    November 20, 2012

  • Neil

Hi everyone, I'm dealing with serious health issues at the moment and currently based back up in my hometown of Lancashire. But if others would like to get together in my absence that's great too

    November 6, 2012

  • Susan

Hi Rachael and others. I like the idea of this group and would gladly attend. Bath on a Saturday afternoon would be good for me. Thanks. Sue

Hi, I'm in the Cheltenham area and am not sure if I'll be able to come, but I'd like to. Bath on a Saturday afternoon might be doable. (I'd have to check bus times). :)

  • Neil

Hi Elaine, thanks for posting a comment - I've been pretty busy myself plus dealing with a niggling medical problem, also been waiting to see if there's much enthusiasm - the group hasn't really taken off and it's not worth trying to make it happen all by myself! but maybe we can give it another try and see if there's interest in having a meeting sometime in the next month or so? no harm in seeing.... best wishes, Neil

    July 26, 2012

  • Neil

nice idea Rhoda, I don't think I'll be able to make it myself but if anyone else is interested we can add it as a meetup! best wishes, Neil

Hi Veronika, well as we have only heard from 4 of us out of 72 it doesn't seem there's a real hurry, but I am getting a clearer idea of my own schedule over the next couple of months and will maybe get a chance to discuss a possible startoff event with one of my friends soon, so watch this space and I'll hope to be able to update you properly fairly soon

Hello Neil, I am wondering if ther is going to be some happening? Please let me know, so I can schedule it. Thank you. Ve.

    January 25, 2012

  • Nicola B

    Can we meet in Bath?

    January 22, 2012

  • Neil

thanks for the feedback Veronika and Phil, some interesting ideas there that seem worth following up - let's let this project gestate for a week or two and see what else people come up with, then see about arranging a first meeting

    January 9, 2012

  • Phil C.

Hi Neil, I'd certainly be interested if the meetings are in Bristol. I like Veronika's comments. I'm particularly interested in ways of re-socialising communities - filling the gaps which many people experience as a result of a lack of close knit family and lack of a church/spiritual support group which they find relevant. Groups/initiatives I find inspiring in this area include: www.justfortheloveofit.org/, www.happycity.org.uk/, wearelightbox.co.uk/, www.couchsurfing.org and freeskilling

another possible topic might be supermarkets vs. local stores, how did change the shopping habits and how to get back to basics. Also hearing from someone from recycling companies (transformation of) products) that are successful in current competitive environment. And last but not least where and how to buy ecological clothes. I . think I have many more in my mind, but let´s leave it when we meet. I am really looking forward to it. Ve.

hey Neil, I am definitely in, would be very happy to come and participate. I would prefer Bristol area, but Bath is not a problem, unless it is in late hours. I would be very interested to hear about differences between bio, fair trade, organic, when product can have these attributes. I would also like to meet people working in sustainable companies, almost in any branch, how they present their selves, how they are getting customers, how did they build up their ideas. ...
