Here is some background on Purity Aquafarms.
Founded in 2013 by Vancouver entrepreneur Mike Bailey, Purity Aquafarms Ltd. is a vision of how urban farming and aquaculture can benefit local businesses and the community. Through the use of innovative and modern urban growing methods and the production of 100% organic and pesticide-free produce and fish, the company is a model of what can be achieved towards more sustainable food production.
At Purity Aquafarms Ltd., we combine hydroponics (growing plants in water without soil) and aquaculture (fish farming) into what is called aquaponics. Aquaponics is a highly efficient closed loop system where fish provide nutrients for plants to grow and the plants, in turn, clean the water for the fish. The fish are fed organic food and no inorganic pesticides and fertilizers are used on the plants. This system can be set up anywhere in an urban environment, which means that fresh, organic produce and fish can be supplied to local buyers with a low carbon footprint.
