Four Heatons Bookworms

Are there any Heatonian's wanting to be involved with a book club within our meet-up group? If so...GREAT!! Let me know who you are so I know you are interested and it can become a regular calendar event for 2014. I for one will be doing more reading for pleasure in 2014! I am suggesting this club to be a monthly meeting and book club members (AKA... us, the Heatonian Bookworms) either take turns to select the reads or vote between two or three titles and synopsis. Also, the venue can be flexible, notice too it has yet to be fixed closer to the initial meet-up. If you are interested, then we better crack on with a book now and over Christmastime. So, how about we check out this book ahead of the book-club: Where'd You Go, Bernadette, written by Maria Semple. http://www.mariasemple.com/whered-you-go-bernadette-the-book/

I have just discovered Thoms will be closed next week for a one week refurbishment so there has been a venue change for the first book club meet. Hope the nee plan to meet at the Plough will suit everyone. Remember to bring any recommended titles you have got stored away too :)

Hi Bookworms! I am ready to get into our first read...Where'd you go Bernadette, mind you it will be in-between the Christmas classics on the box(!) I suggest the venue for the first book group is in Heaton Moor at the Thoms wine bar (opposite the Elizabethan). The transport links are good and there will be room for parking available here. Thereafter, if you would like to choose the title, you can choose the venue you too.

If you are unable to get your hands on a copy for any reason, please send me a message and let me know. I bought one cheap online (although it will not suit everyone to do that) but I will pass my copy to one of my sisters. So don't be put off coming by that. See you soon,
    Kathryn

Hi David, I haven't don't that. I am happy to do that for those unable to get a copy of books and specifically request from me to do this. I think otherwise we can individually source our books - and maybe do this from the library. It could potentially lead to a pressured/less than relaxed environment if I am bringing in the reading material and collecting it too, we'll all have different reading habits too I don't doubt. Nonetheless, as the group decide on a book list, this may change.

Fine. I'm happy to do the collecting/distributing of books if that helps, however, as I've obviously got more time to do it than the workers - lol (keep working hard you lot to make sure my pension gets paid next year!!). How about asking for suggestions as to what is read as the second book so people can vote on it and we arrive at a consensus over the next week or two? (Please no chicklits though!!!)

This is very helpful David - I appreciate the information. Ok, each month I will repost the number for the library service in order to keep it available for Bookworms if they want to obtain copies of books from there. As for a venue; thank you for approaching the Railway although for January I am leaning to the Elizabethan. 1) we can reserve comfortable amount of space and grab some food too (2) It is also licenced 3) It is easily accessible by all types of transport.

I'm not sure but I think you collect the books in bulk from the library then give out/collect them at each meeting rather than each person contacting them separately. Do you want to check?

    Hi Kathryn,
think it's a great idea. Anticipating your doing this I asked Linda, who runs our library reading group, if we can get copies of books free to lend out from the library service and she gave me a number to contact for details and advice. It's[masked] if you'd like to ring them and then you may be able to get the book you suggested to distribute. As for a venue I tackled the landlord of the Railway pub in Heaton Norris and he would be happy to encourage the group by providing a free venue (assuming of course some of us drink - not a problem in my case!) What do you/other people think?

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
