River Bend Community Park Sunday Stroll

We will meet in the dog parking lot on Illinois St.

There is a nice trail around the park and then three fenced in areas that allow dogs off leash.

We will walk the trail and if you're interested have the dogs play off lead in the fenced in dog park areas.  There is a fenced in area just for small dogs.

The park contains:

  • 3/4 acre dog park
  • Doggy water fountain
  • doggy water fountain
  • double-gated security entrance

Woo hoo...no ticks on dogs or myself from this one!

Lucy only had the one tick on her ear in the beginning of the walk (probably from our front lawn). I'm starting to get paranoid about the ticks on myself. I've found two in my hair and one crawling on my stomach. That felt creepy. At least none of them had a chance to settle in.

It is too hot for my little ones. What is a cooling coat? I am intrigued.

Thanks Jeff, I think I'll try that next time!

The trick is to not leave it on all the time. When the the coats get warm, they start to hold in the heat. But by the time the cool coat loses its cool, the dog is soaking wet. Removing the coat lets evaporative cooling take over and continue the job on the dog and the coats. Then just add water as necessary and repeat :)

I might not be able to make it for this walk. Bug-a-Boo is a French Bulldog and they don't do well in the heat. I checked the weather and it looks like it will be in the mid eighties at the time we are scheduled to meet! I will keep checking but don't want to risk him getting overheated. Bummer, we were both looking forward to meeting more dogs and dog parents....maybe next time.

We (the Greyhound rescue group) makes them out of inexpensive bath towels. They have a hole for the hounds head, and a belly band that secures it with velcro. This might be a good way to have one until Bug-a-Boo reaches final size.

Great idea! I might need to try that. Had to improvise tonight to create a homemade belly band...I think the little guy has a UTI. Off to the vet in the morning!

Hot for May, but Lucy's cool coat really helped her get through the walk and playtime.

A little warm, but we did OK! Had a good time in the run with everyone. The fur kids seemed to enjoy themselves as well.

Well I'm at River Bend on Illinois Street and don't see one dog here. I guess we will start walking.

We are by the tennis courts...am I in the wrong side of the park?

Does anyone know the length of the trail/walk here?

    May 13, 2013

    • Jeff

Thanks Nancy...just wondering if the hounds would have enough energy left over to play in the park, or if they would just lay down and fall asleep lol. I still need to see if I can make it...I'll RSVP later in the week if it works out, and note which dogs so you don't need to write all of them on the name tag :)

Sounds good. Knowing my Lucy, she would pass out in the middle of wrestling.
