October Book Club: The Player of Games by Iain Banks

Hey all, this month's book is the Player of Games by Iain Banks.

Due to the end of October is Halloween and probably a busy time for us, we will meet the beginning of November.

The Culture - a human/machine symbiotic society - has thrown up many great Game Players, and one of the greatest is Gurgeh. Jernau Morat Gurgeh. The Player of Games. Master of every board, computer and strategy. Bored with success, Gurgeh travels to the Empire of Azad, cruel and incredibly wealthy, to try their fabulous game...a game so complex, so like life itself, that the winner becomes emperor. Mocked, blackmailed, almost murdered, Gurgeh accepts the game, and with it the challenge of his life - and very possibly his death.

Going to be late... Accident on 270. Probably some idiot texting on his phone while driving.... Can you believe some people?

I haven't read the player of games, but have perused some of the other books from that universe. So, I kind know what the games is, but haven't read the book. Can I come?

Yes, as long as you're okay with us talking about it. We're not that strict about actually "reading" the book. :-)

I find The Culture is too vast for me to comprehend.

I think that's somewhat intentional. Humanity is not running the culture, so it's like trying to understand a family's events from the perspective of their dog.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
