This group was founded in Fredrick County and has grown to include cyclists throughout Maryland as well as Pennsylvania and Virginia. We enjoy casual cycling at a variety of speeds and levels and like to socialize during the ride. We often get together after a ride for food and drinks.
Our rides vary from 15-20 miles introductory rides to organized Century Rides. We generally ride in Maryland, but have been known to organize rides in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Virginia, and West Virginia. We try to ride during the colder months, weather permitting.
Meetup Groups are not free, so a voluntary annual $5.00 member contribution (calendar year based) after the second ride to cover the cost of the Meetup website is appreciated. Our No-Drop Policy
On all our regular rides we have a policy of never dropping a rider--that is, we will not ride off and leave a rider behind. This is to encourage new riders or those not familiar with the route to join us with the confidence that they will not be left to fend for themselves. Our ride leaders are also experienced in handling minor road-side repairs such as repairing a flat or putting a thrown chain back on the drivetrain, but all riders are encouraged to learn how to perform simple repairs and to carry tire changing tools, a spare tube, and a pump or gas cylinders to re-inflate a repaired tire.
This policy is NOT an invitation for riders to participate in a ride that is beyond their normal ride distance or pace capabilities. We try to provide a range of ride distances and paces to suit most cyclists. We strongly encourage new cyclists to begin with the slower paced rides and gradually work up to the faster paces if they so desire. Ask the ride leader of the slower rides for advice on moving up to another pace and/or distance. They will be able to guide you and give you advice on increasing speed and distance. Our Rides
Our ride categories are listed below. On all rides, cyclists are expected to have a safe working bike and helmet. Riders are to carry supplies and equipment appropriate for the ride to include food/snacks, fluids, tools, and spare tube(s). Most of the group members use road bicycles, which are preferred for most of our rides, but hybrids will work fine. Mountain bikes are not recommended, but will work if you are in shape and can maintain the specified speed.
Getting to know the Group Rides are shorter rides up to 15 or 20 miles and speeds of 10 to 12 mph. This is a great beginner/getting back into cycling ride on generally flatter terrain. One of the ride leaders will sweep the group from time to time to ensure everyone returns safely. If you are new to the group and either new or returning to cycling, please join one of these rides first.
Regular/Intermediate Rides are up 20 miles on weekdays after work and longer (usually 30 to 50 miles) on weekends. Speeds are 13 to 15 mph on flat to rolling terrain.
