TR2NB40 - Great Canal Walk - 2014

Trace the towpath footsteps of the Delaware & Raritan Canal, a 175 year old waterway across Central New Jersey - from Trenton to New Brunswick. The TR2NB40 - Great Canal Walk, a 40-mile, one -day long distance walk, is a superb physical and mental challenge and the first long segment in a series of three walking events aiming to walk across New Jersey following the East Coast Greenway. The event is free hosted by the FreeWalkers and the East Coast Greenway Alliance.

The D&R Canal is one of the most beautiful hidden natural resources in the state. The walk is totally flat and nearly all on packed natural surface. If Spring eventually comes, this is the place you will want to be.

The FreeWalkers are partnering again with the East Coast Greenway on a program for 2014 called the Cross-Jersey Walking Challenge which sets a goal of walking the 100 miles of the ECG, across the entire State, at any time during the year. This event is the first of 3 events that will take you across the entire state this year. Join the challenge.

First super lengthy hike. Hoping to do another hike the next day so I may do less than 40. We'll see.

Realistically, I should probably attempt shorter walks for a bit longer before the 40-miler. I will attend the Spring Ahead walk on the 23rd instead

I also would love to take the challenge but have been sedentary for months. I would love it if there were a group to do it in half distances...10-15 miles each time.
We could do the first 10-15 with you. Then in between the big walks, we could do the other 10-15. So instead of walking across NJ in 3 segments, it would take this group 6 segments. What do you think?

I am interested, but I am still a beginner, just getting started in walking and hiking. can you recommend some ways to get beginner experience?
The canal walk is something I would love to do in the future, but I don't think I am ready yet.
    Thank you
