Facilitated discussion on whether Mathematics is an invention of the mind.

Is Mathematics an invention of the human mind, or part of the fabric of reality?

19th Century physicist James Jeans said “The Universe appears to have been designed by a pure mathematician.” As Mario Livio states in his book Is God a Mathematician?, “Mathematics appears to be almost too effective in describing and explaining not only the cosmos at large, but even some of the most chaotic of human enterprises.” We will discuss some of the major mathematical discoveries in history, and debate whether they are merely cleverly devised symbols or fundamental universal principles.

This was a wonderfully complex subject, with intriguing discussions, and so many diverse approaches to how it is understood and used by humanity. I'm glad I didn't miss this one.

So, simply stated, is the question: Do we discover the world through Math (our made up construct) or is it inherent in the universe and we are discovering "it?"

Perhaps it could be helpful to define Mathematics at the onset of this discussion. When we refer to mathematics, what are we talking exactly?
