We are trying to increase our market by moving from a "consulting-with-software tool" model to a SaaS model, where the software will be the centerpiece.
All of the above, including Skype, Linked-In, Drop-Box, Box, Evernote, lots of iOS games.
It seems you need at least two defining qualities for it to work. One, there must be a compelling interest in the free version, since maybe 5-10% of users will ever upgrade. Second, the premium product should be priced not out of reach of the average consumer, and must provide some functionality that is difficult to find elsewhere. Both must be rock-solid apps from the user's perspective.
