Fresh Ground Stories: Breaking Free - Stories of Escape

This year I’ve been trying to break free of a lot of things - people, situations, old ways of thinking. What I’ve learned is that in order to think a different way I have to act a different way. Turns out in order to change my life I have to actually get off the couch. So inconvenient!

Next month’s theme is about breaking free. Breaking free of people, places, ideas, beliefs, or whatever else was holding you back. Tell us what you did to break out of your shell, prison, rut, marriage, job or routine. (Seriously, if you have a story about breaking out of prison we really want to hear it.)

Practice your story in the kitchen while the oatmeal’s cooking and then bring it out to Roy Street Coffee on Jan 23.

The rules for stories are below but you know the kind we’re looking for: true stories that happened to you that still mean something to you days, months or years later.

I hope to see you at our next show on Thursday, Jan 23, 7:00pm at the Roy St Cafe.

Paul, you are a masterful host! Great job, and WOW what a bunch of AWESOME stories. Thanks all! Hope to make it across the pond for the next one.

Across the pond?!?! You came from another continent??? Ok, new rule. If you come from across any major ocean for this show I will extend the show another 10 minutes and make sure you get on.

Puget Sound is pretty major...especially when you're swimming...of course I was riding the ferry. But still. :)

Thea, As one who got there very early and got a big puffy seat I totally disagree! I'm just kidding, you're probably right. It was comfy, though.

That's a great idea, Susanna. The library should be happy to get people in there. Many people forget they exist anymore. It sounds like a great marriage to me. Who better to be prospective library users than people who love a good story? They should offer the space complimentary.

Thanks for organizing these events. This was my first, and I enjoyed it very much, but I think you need a bigger space. Now I know to arrive extra early to get a seat.

Have you ever touch based with Seattle Central Library - they have that auditorium. They do charge nonprofits to rent it, but maybe SPL would cut you a break because you're promoting public storytelling & SPL keeps saying they want libraries to help build community...Sounds like a great partnership to me.

I wonder if we can stay at Roy St but switch the seat type to add capacity. The big puffy red seats take up a lot more space, it seems.

Great except for there not being enough seats

amazing stories of great escapes, and amazing barista (who made sure my red wine was entirely from the just-opened bottle)...

I had such a wonderful time! My first time with your group and it was fabulous! And, yes, Paul, you ARE a masterful emcee. Loved the stories, loved the energy of the room. Do you only gather at that location or do you plan other locations as well? I had to leave early because I live so far away. :( I look forward to seeing all of you next time.

Thank you Kathi! I'm glad you liked the show. It was an amazing night. Right now we only do shows at Roy St. It's free and has the casual feel that I think is good for the show. I'd be up for doing special shows at other locations but I don't know where we could do that right now. If you or anyone else has an idea let me know and I will definitely think about it. I hope you can make it next month :-)

Paul, I am back from FSG, feeling filled and connected. You -- we all -- have created real community. Thank you to all who shared with words and witnessing.

I came across this and reminds me of the stories of vulnerability and personal transitions which were shared last night. It is a gentle, artful animation about releasing winter and opening to the new: http://www.jacquielaw....

Sorry I forgot as I got caught up in doing hard things I need to do to escape a pattern of not being heard! The irony!!!

I just go an email from someone who was having trouble RSVP'ing on the meetup site. Not sure what's going on but don't worry if the site isn't working for some reason. It's always fine to show up without RSVP'ing :)

Will we actually manage to fit 100 people into Roy's? ;)

I'm pretty sure we did it once so I'm crossing my fingers we can do it again. It'd be great to see the place packed to the back windows.

I am really excited to come to this as my first meetup; I'm looking forward to hearing stories and maybe getting the gal to share as well. Escapism is kind of my MO. Great topic!
