Friends of Calico was formed to maintain the site and finance the science started by archaeologist Dr. Louis S.B. Leakey. The FOC mission is to conduct scientific investigation while encouraging the public to participate in an archaeological dig at little or no cost.
Friends of Calico has recently undergone a major transition. With Dr. Adella (Dee) Schroth (Anthropology Curator, San Bernardino County Museum) as Site Archaeologist and Claude Short as FOC President, we are rebuilding the FOC membership and the archaeological site, Camp Leakey, to be more accessible to the public and to provide educational services to teachers and students.
Along the way we have a whole bunch of fun. I have learned to love the beauty of the desert landscape and have become addicted to seeing a sky full of stars once again. The volunteers are generous, committed, intelligent people who love science and communicate easily with others about all types of ideas. Quite a delightful group.
Come join us. Two days in the desert and 140 miles from Los Angeles will seem like a vacation from the world.
Your Organizer, JK Mueller
