  • Apr 6, 2013 · 8:30 AM
  • Calico Early Man Site

Come to The Calico Early Man Site Archaeological Dig - Learn a little science, have a lot of fun!

Due to the overwhelming response to our Dig Weekends we must limit the number of diggers to 30 per weekend. So the first 30 people that sign up with the Registar ( Dan Eliseuson) Saturday morning will be the diggers for that weekend.

Digging tools provided. Bring hiking boots, hat, scarf, gloves, Saturday lunch from home.  If you have them, bring magnifying glass and knee pads. The Motel 6 or the Super 8 in Barstow (19 miles), very rough campsites at the dig site (firepits, tables, outhouse only). Or drive in for Saturday only.

Schedule for Saturday, April 6th

8:30 am volunteer sign-in, orientation, and assignment (latecomers welcome)

9:00 am pits open for digging

12 noon lunch break (bring a lunch from home)

1:00 pm digging resumes

4:00 pm pits close

5:00pm - 6:pm Dinner ($5 contribution includes dinner and breakfast)

6:00pm -7:pm lecture in the new classroom

8:00 - 9:pm bonfire (weather permitting)

Easter Sunday, April 7th

7:00 - 8:30am eggs, pancake, juice, bacon breakfast provided in rangers quarters

8:30 - 12 noon digging

noon- head toward home

In case of inclement weather, digging will be replaced by other activities such as weighing and sorting artifacts, training in artifact manufacturing and recognition, site maintenance, or flintknapping lessons.

I had a good time. I was expecting trenches and underground tunnels/caves however the Wren pit was a good experience for the beginner like me. Thanks everyone!

Tom, or any one connected with the military (Posses military Identification) you have a total access to Ft. Irwin and Marine Corps Logistics Base Yermo, commissary, exchange barbers shop SHOWERS,SAUNA,GYM ETC. As a matter of fact, your genial host and Calico Site Manager , Chris Christensen retired from the MCLB.

Tip for Tom, I use a Camel-back hydration system and insert an extra bladder the night before Calico. I fill 3/4's full and place it in the freezer. Thus, I have 2 bladders, 1 with water and a second with Gator-aid. And again, a natural sponge, amazing what you can accomplish. Natural only, that plastic or man made stuff, not so good, does not hold water and drys hard) "Sine Pari"

      Thanks Daniel...off I go!

Tom, all water is hand carried in by the Site Manager from his residence! The "running water" is gravity fed from non-potable water trailer Including the kitchen water.....Which is why participants are cautioned to be self-sufficient in all aspects. I recommend a natural sponge in a plastic bag. Another choice is a solar water shower. Keep in mind that water weighs 8 pounds a gallon and there are only 2-3 places that are higher that 6 feet that will support the weight. Waterless germicidal soap and a towel works. Next week I will be packing (carrying) in to several potential cultural sites including water, so-my morning choices will be,shave, wash up or have coffee!

PS: there is an outdoor pool at the Oak Tree Inn, if you are military, free showers and sauna at the Marine Corps Logistics Base gym at Yermo

"Life is hard on the frontier" enjoy the weekend

Oh great, I am a veteran. Thanks Daniel!

Do we have a shower at the facility, even an outdoor one to wash up after the dig?

    April 5, 2013

    • Michelle

Nope, though we do have running water in the kitchen. Most people just bring wipes, or just stay dusty like everyone else. :) It's so dry that it won't be that bad.

    • Tom L.

Thanks for the heads up Michelle! I guess I'll be dusty like everyone else :)
