Due to the excessive vandalism at the historic Calico Early Man Sit over the last few months, Friends of Calico can no longer host our monthly digs at that location. Instead, we will be conducting archaeological investigations at other sites within the Calico Mountains Archaeological region beginning in October.
The change in focus means we are limited to hosting experienced archaeologists, archaeologists in-training and members of the Friends of Calico. The new field work locations include both historic and prehistoric sites. Fieldwork activities will include relocation of sites, mapping and surface collecting, and test pit excavations as appropriate. We will be following up at the museum with artifact analysis.
Although we have a few tools (buckets, trowels), we recommend that you bring your own. Also bring hiking boots or sturdy walking shoes, hat, scarf, gloves, sunscreen, a bagged lunch and lots of water. The sites will be "rough", so there will be no running water or restroom facilities available.
For those who are inexperienced and interested in learning about archaeology, we will be posting meetup times in the near future to work at the museum once a month on the Calico collections (experienced archaeologists are welcome too). This will give you the opportunity to learn about the non-fieldwork aspects of archaeology. You may be able to transition to working out at the sites once you have some museum experience.
There is no cost to participate in the digging or other volunteer efforts. A $10 donation per person would be welcome to help support the site if you are a member of the Friends of Calico. You may purchase a membership to Friends of Calico, a non-profit organization, which finances the ongoing scientific investigation. Yearly membership is $20 family, $15 individual, $10 students.
