Startup Brainstorming Session

  • Nov 25, 2013 · 6:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Got a startup or product idea? Or lots? Great! Join us for a group brainstorm session where you can:

• share your idea (or roadblock);

• get feedback from other members of this group; and

contribute feedback to others in a casual, cafe atmosphere.

We'll also be providing everyone with an idea generation checklist so that members can start validating their ideas very early on.

We organized this particular event after hearing our awesome (and successful) speaker, Alexa Andrzejewski from Foodspotting share how beneficial it was for her to share her startup idea very early on with many people so that she could get feedback and build a team…it worked! And we've seen it work over and over again at great events like Startup Weekend and Founder Dating! Now it's your turn to share your idea (or parts of it) and get feedback from a creative group of entrepreneurs.

If you're worried about sharing your ideas and would rather hold on tightly to your secrets, then this Meetup may not be for you (share at your own risk)…but don't worry, we have other events that you may enjoy nonetheless! Otherwise, please RSVP* so that we can start brainstorming together!

Moderated by Leila Banijamali, startup lawyer at Bedrock and organizer of this Meetup group. Cookies, coffee, and tea will be served!

*Space is limited and we'll be sticking strictly to the RSVP list. Each member is asked to bring no more or less than one idea to share and time spent on each idea will depend on the number of attendees. See you there!

I had a great time hearing about everyone's ideas and getting some feedback on my idea. Very inspiring. Perfect size for an open discussion. If I lived in San Francisco, I would definitely be at the next one!

question, regarding NDA's, it is my understanding that how you use them needs to be uniform, meaning that you must consistently offer them even if you do not get someone to sign. What is your view?

    1 · November 26, 2013

    • Leila B.

Great question, Chandler. I agree - and mainly because the more effort you put into protecting your venture and treating it with value, the easier it will be to prove that the venture is actually valuable and not something that you acknowledged was publicly known, available, or of little value. You only have something to gain by requesting a signed NDA.

Excellent in every way - small group size allowed for individualistic attention. Can't wait to attend v2 of this event. Awesome job, Laila... just like your last meetup :) !

Hey, as I'm very new to the startup world, what's your take on whether a simple NDA would be advisable? I'm leaning towards *not* as we should be open to discussing ideas...

    1 · November 20, 2013

    • Leila B.

Great question, Rafael! Let's talk about this in more detail at the meeup. NDAs are great if they're drafted well (with specificity) and if you're ready to enforce them (that part can be costly). They also communicate that you're serious about protecting the value behind your business or idea. On the other hand, you may find that some people, like investors, will refuse to sign them since they want to be able to freely advise their targets and don't want to increase their exposure to risk. All personnel and licensing agreements should contain some form of confidential information clause as a default.

Hey Leila - thanks for the great response to this question! I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the matter at Monday's event :) !

Hi, great idea! I can't make it, but I'll throw out an idea I had recently as food for thought: A site to "loosely follow" celebs or sports figures. You know how you ask "I wonder what happened to so-and-so..." and find that they are involved in charity, acting on Broadway, or playing semi-pro in Europe, etc.

You could tag someone to "loosely follow" and then receive a notification once per month or quarter with any updates. When you log into the site, you see a series of timeline graphs, one for each person you follow (a la a stock portfolio dashboard), and you hover over points see major events and click to see more details (news articles, Wikipedia, etc.).

In sum, for a large group of celebs you don't care enough to follow them on Twitter or set a Google News alert (too much detail), but you wouldn't mind "loosely following" them, to see what they are up to every few years. What do you think? Feel free to comment or pm me, or just treat this as a warm-up for the event...

Awesome! Thanks, Charlie. Celebrities may be a good niche to start but why stop there? I bet this'd work for anyone, even companies. I'd be curious to know how valuable subsequent updates would be or how the service might "upsell" other content. Great idea! I love when people share their ideas - we need to see more of that, even if it's silly (this isn't!).
