I remembered that I never mentioned the architect who was responsible for the concept of Design Patterns. It was Christopher Alexander. While it might be hard to see the similarities with building and community architecture, two of his works essentially, "Notes on the Synthesis of Form" (1964) and "A Pattern Language" (1977) are highly regarding in the communities of software design and development. I hope you find them interesting.

Thank you everyone for coming out last night. My goal was to be able to provide a little something for everyone, both beginners and advanced, so I hope I achieved that for you.

My slides are available at and I've added a final slide that includes links to some of the tools we talked about.

I look forward to seeing you all next month and until then, happy prototyping.

Hey Tim, I really dug your presentation. I'm a heavy Sass user and you had a couple mixins that I love. I managed to find your breakpoint mixin but wasn't sure where to grab the color mixin. Can you tell me where I can get that at? It looks super useful. Thanks for your hard work!

Thanks Daryn, I'm glad you enjoyed it. The color palette aspect is actually a function. If you look at slide 19. The colors are setup using the $color-palette map within a configuration file. Then within my mixins and functions I create the palette function that you can see at top of that slide. That let's me shorthand the calls to the map. I hope that answers your question.

  • Tarik Here is a cool app that will process your Sass/Less files automatically. This is how I was able to use Less immediately without really needing to understand how to set it up or run (node.js for Less, Ruby for Sass). However, I'll be switching to just using Sass without Koala. I'm learning as I go, but feel free to ask me questions.

There's also prepros which is the equivalent of codekit for windows.

It really depends what your web stack is but I prefer using nodejs with gulp to compile my Sass files since it's web stack agnostic and theres no need to install Ruby in order to use it.

If you click on the map link above, it will give you the VMC on Google Maps, which you can then give you a street view, panning to the right will show you the entrance to the VMC.

Future topic suggestion: I would love to hear someone speak about Angular.js or Node.js if anyone regularly uses those.

I have to miss because my friend is getting married. Who has a wedding on a Thursday?

    1 · October 3

    • Lindsay Jo C.

In their defense, planning weddings on off days (AKA, not weekends), saves a lot of money. Most vendors are half or at least 30% less on a non-traditional day. :p

I would love to attend, but I won't be able to make it at 5:30 since I work in Thonotosassa and don't get off until 5pm. :-(

  • Milagro L.

Do we need any prior preparation for this?

    September 8

    • Tim K.

Hi Milagro. What type of preparation did you have in mind? I'll be posting a comment to this thread shortly to give everyone a better understand on what they can expect from the talk. I would suggest that most people would want a basic understand of HTML and CSS, but I will get into other more advanced topics. Non-designers and management too will learn about some of the benefits prototype serves to the general process and how it fits into the development cycle.
