Bootstrap 3 w/ Charles Irizarry

Bootstrap - previously associated with Twitter - has just released v3 of their popular web development framework. There have been a number of changes in this version but the most significant change is the mobile first approach. This means that every single class, component and javascript directive was designed to work great on a mobile device and then scaled up for desktop devices.

http://getbootstrap.com/

Related: Bootstrap relies on jQuery for most of its DOM manipulation. There is a drop in replacement for this that uses AngularJS directives instead of jQuery if anyone (Ernie?) wants to talk about that.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Charles Irizarry is Rokk3r Labs’ Chief Product Architect. Working with companies on a regular basis, Charles translates ideas into technological solutions through innovative software design and development.

[He] has a quintessential hacker story; after having been suspended from high school for exploiting a security hole, he landed a full-time IT-security position with Miami-Dade Public Schools while still attending Florida International University. In his nascent career, Charles has already successfully sold a company he co-founded, 5DPI Media, and has architected over 20 software products and platforms.

    Hey guys,

Been talking to Ernie about leading this as a follow up from my last Bootstrap Meetup.

Last meeting focused on Bootstrap 2.3 for novice/new front-end developers. This time around I wanted to make it about Bootstrap 3 + LESS/Node.js for novice/intermediate developers:

    - Setting up your local environment with Node & Grunt.
    - Exploring Bootstrap's LESS framework & mixins.
    - Compiling LESS & JS on the fly while you work by leveraging Node & Grunt.
    - Customizing Bootstrap 3 to look/work like your design.

If this is something interesting for everyone, please let me know!

    Thanks,

Hey Charles, has the video from that night been uploaded....

Hey Eddie, don't have an ETA on it yet but you can expect it to pop up on the Rokk3rTV channel here: http://www.youtube.co...

AngularJS is popping up everywhere these days. The latests: my largest client is replacing one of their RoR based sites with it. I need to learn it pretty quick. Any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Dan

Levi, to quickly answer your question there are a lot of differences between B&M and Angular and other MVCs. Mainly that Backbone doesn't natively support and isn't really built to support live-bindings at all. When a variables is updated in BB it rerenders the template/view entirely. In more advanced frameworks a variable in the template is bound to the variable in your code. If you update the variable in your code it updates just that portion of your template. There are countless other differences like memory management, etc. Come on the 7th and we'll go over all of the differences and why they matter.

Chris, sounds great. AngularJS feels more my speed. I will check out CanJS some more however.

Hello all, I am sorry I missed this meet-up. Sounds like it was a good one. I'm new to this group, so I apologize if this is against protocol: I am looking to hire a Boostrap 3 / Web Developer for full-time work in Miami. What's the best way to post job openings?

    1 · September 25, 2013

    • Raf F.

Thanks Charkes. Interesting app. Sure, we'd be interested in sponsoring a meetup. Boostrap3, Java/Spring, jQuery/Web Dev. What's the process? Hit me up.

Hi Raf, also feel free to post the position here in addition to all the other suggestions:

    Hey guys,

re: streaming - I totally dropped the ball on this one due to all the multi-tasking I had to do yesterday evening. I'll be better about this; or better yet, if a regular wants to take responsibility getting this recorded on a Google Hangout (or has better tech!) let me know and we'll work together.

Here are some links that Charles has provided via Twitter after the follow-up:

http://t.co/nQ7B4TILy2 - "Bootstrap Magic feat Bootstrap 3 : Awesome theme generator with live preview"

    http://t.co/kGcPzbTlgt - "Detailed comparison between Bootstraps 2 and 3"

    http://t.co/10Vhk5ZdtA - "it's $30, but if it helps process/flow, it's worth it."

    Thanks!
    - Ernie

We forgive you :-) . If I'm there, I'll bring my tablet & we can stream off of it.

Charles was very knowledgeable and easy to understand. Great topic too. I never knew how easy it was to tweak Bootstrap. You know it's good when you come out feeling obsolete! :)

LOL, yeah, for quick stuff I still use bash scripts. However, when I got home, I installed node.js and grunt to play with it.

What's the parking situation like at O Cinema?

    September 17, 2013

    • Ernie H.

From their website: "O Cinema does not have a private parking lot. However, street parking in Wynwood is free and readily available. We encourage you to park alongside NW 29th Street – we love our neighbors and don’t want to inconvenience them, so please do not block any of the driveways or entryways of our neighboring properties as your cars will be towed by the city of Miami."

Crap. I'm doing a bit coin presentation. If I wasn't presenting I'd be here. Damn it!

Another location I can suggest is the Miami International University of Art and Design. We have a couple of classrooms and meeting rooms available depending on the amount of attendees. It's located in downtown MIami at 1501 Biscayne Blvd, at the Omni Station. Paid, secure parking is available and the MEtromover is just across the street.

Now that we have a time and date for the meet-up, what burning questions about Bootstrap 3 do you have that you would like to have the speaker(s) address?

The new grid system which seems more complicated than version 2's

    Hey Everyone,

Ernie and I have set the date to Tuesday, Sept 17, at O Cinema!

Will update agenda and details as we get closer.

    Thanks!

I liked the idea to merge NodeJS and Grunt but it's fine in the separate way too, also you can include Yeoman in the NodeJS + Grunt + Yeoman it's awesome to build app stacks for NodeJS.

    August 14, 2013

    • Charles I.

Makes sense, but I am generally trying to keep it boxed around using tools to compile your CSS.LESS.

      August 14, 2013

    • Angel Ramirez L.

Well maybe is a topic for another talk :)
