Whether you're new to night photography or have been doing it for a while, I invite you to join us for a night of learning and shooting at Red Rocks. A limited number of dates are available and they're expected to fill up fast. Registration takes place through the front range meetup site so get registered now - before they fill up.

How To Get There
We'll meet at the amphitheater in the very top rows on the south side.  This is easiest to access from the parking lot above the amphitheatre called the "Top Circle Lot".  The easiest way to get there is to use entrance #1 from US-40 and follow West Alameda Parkway up to the top lot.

We'll be meeting just a very short distance from the parking lot so I thought I'd provide a link to show where it is from the "Top Circle Lot".

Truly enjoyed the presentation. I learned a lot about both my camera and night photography. It was especially enlightening to learn that it is better to disable the long exposure noise filtering to allow one to take more shots. One of my photography books on the 60D recommended to enable it.

Hi everybody... I'm curious if this is the rescheduled new date (Sept 5) for the event and if I can bring a guest that won't have a camera. Will they still have to pay? (I just moved back to Colorado from being in Ohio for 4 years taking care of my Grandma). So glad to be back in CO! :)

    • Mike B.

Hi Rebecca, you are correct. The rescheduled (new) date for this event is September 5th. You're also correct that you can bring a guest that doesn't have a camera at no additional charge. I appreciate your asking but I see no problem with that at all. I look forward to seeing you on the 5th!

I'm on way other there . . . I see the messages before about the concert . . . hope we will all find each other.

    August 15, 2013

    • Mike B.

Hi Julia, I sent you (and the rest of the attendees) an email about our options including a refund. Can you respond to that message please?

      August 17, 2013

    • Kristal K.

Julia, In order to process a refund you need to provide your name in full and the email address used for your Paypal transaction. Without that we cannot proceed. Obviously you don't want to provide that on a public forum so send it to Mike or myself and we will take care of the process.

Guess it was a good thing I called Mike, left VM and he called back. Just thanking lucky stars I didn't get caught up the traffic.

    August 15, 2013

  • Mary Lou M.

Hey, Mike. I was there at the Top Circle Lot - but found the absolutely last parking place and decided not to stick around, as I didn't want to get caught up in the after-concert traffic. Please let me know when you reschedule...

    August 15, 2013

    • Mary Lou M.

Hey, Dennis! Good to meet you. By the way, Mike: I did take a few photos while I was trying to figure out what to do. I'll send you one. :)

      August 15, 2013

    • Mary Lou M.

can't figure out how to post a photo for you... sorry about that!

Hey according to the description: "This is a photowalk training event that features a relatively brief period (2 hours) of in-field training with no training on scouting or post-processing." I'd say it's a Great lesson in scouting! - Dennis

    August 15, 2013

    • Mike B.

There's no doubt about that, Dennis! I don't usually have concert planners to contend with but I'm not blaming anyone else. I appreciate your understanding and good nature about it. I'll follow-up again soon.

      August 15, 2013

    • Dennis D

Yeah, about the time I was driving up that final grade past all the stretch limos I started thinking, "lesson in scouting" :)

      August 15, 2013

  • Dennis D

After re-reading that, it sounded to me like a slam, but it wasn't meant to be. For me it was a great lesson in scouting. - Dennis

No worries, I didn't take it that way. Your having mentioned that line did make me laugh though. :-)

Shit happens, right? No worries Mike. Will try to get to Mt Evans tomorrow night but was really looking forward to shooting red rocks. Hopefully we can reschedule for a Mon or Tue night in the next week or two before labor day..

    August 15, 2013

Thank you for your understanding, Cliff. It really is much appreciated. I'll be in-touch again soon.

Looking forward to this photo walk. Even getting a wide angle lens for it. Unfortunately, it's a 3.5 -5.6, so not the brightest.

    1 · August 14, 2013

    • Mike B.

At Red Rocks, I don't think you'll need the brightest of lenses, but wide is definitely good. I look forward to seeing you at the photowalk, Al!

  • Grace B.

Hi Mike, Glad to have noticed Mary Lou's question along with your encouraging answer because I also have an older DSLR camera concern. Mine is a Pentax K10D, purchased new in 2007 but it came out in late '06. The maximum ISO is only 1600. I would love to know your thoughts before signing up for the night photowalk. Thanks! Grace

    August 12, 2013

    • Mike B.

I see that as well. No worries, Mary Lou... I'll be happy to spend some time with both you and Grace to make sure we're focusing as sharp as possible. I do appreciate the heads up though. I'll be up for the challenge. :-)

Mike, My camera body (Nikon D3000) is not very good in low light situations. Would it still be worth taking this course, or should I hold out until I can upgrade?

    August 6, 2013

    • Mike B.

Mary, that's a great question and one that I've considered myself at times too. I definitely recommend doing the photowalk and not waiting... here's why. I learned night photography on a Nikon D300 which wasn't great with low light either. I wanted to upgrade but the cost was pretty daunting so I ended up having to wait. It turned out to be a great way to go because the opportunity to learn good technique was actually better with the older cameras than with a newer one. Technology can be good, but it can also make easy to get better images without having to learn the technique. I really wanted to focus on learning the techniques and boy did this turn out to be a great move. And for this, I'm actually really thankful. Some things may be a bit more of a challenge with an older camera, but your D3000 should be more than ready for the task. I hope that helps, but please let me know if you have any more questions.
