Free Workshop Sponsored by Digital Photo Academy

Two Seasoned Professional Photographers, Dan Jahn and Mark Osler, are going to lead a presentation, followed by live shoot on the special experience of creative portraiture in studio lighting.

The first segment will be a presentation that will be informative for anyone who wants to bone up on their D-SLR 101 knowledge, no matter what manufacturer. A tribute to photographers everywhere, the Ricoh Imaging Americas Corp is sponsoring this event, but the power point will be quite informative whether you appear with a camera manufactured by Canon, Nikon, Samsung, Pentax or whoever. This program is about keeping a handle on the mechanics of your camera so you can execute your creative vision.

In Addition

A 2 hour shoot follows with 2 different lighting setups and 6 different models who will pose solo as well as in duos and small groups. A variety of themes and sensibilities will be depicted by the models, from casual and comfy to way-out and surreal.

There will be special prizes for the members of Front Range Photography.

Since this is a FREE event and is limited due to space to a MAX of 40 attendees, we are going to insist that if you cannot attend that you do not rsvp.  IF you find you cannot attend, please do everyone a favor and un-rsvp as soon as you know (hopefully this isn't the day of the event, as that isn't of much notice to others!)
I don't like having to say this, but we will be watching and if we continue to have people who habitually take up space and not show, we will limit your access to events.

There I said it.

For those of you who took photos of Shawn, he specifically asked me to forward the request to all of you to kindly share photos of him and to send them to
    [masked].
He is the gentleman posing at the second setup in front of the red screen. He is not a model himself but the manager of one of the models there. I left the first setup as many of you did because it was too crowded and wondered why there were no models at the second setup. So I approached Shawn who was sitting on the sidelines. We chatted a bit and I asked him if he would mind posing for us. He said he had never done any modeling before but he was game. It turned out to be great fun and I think Shawn and all of us had a blast. Thank you Shawn! Since he did us the favor, I hope some of you will take the time to send him some photos. Thanks!

Dan's presentation was great and I thanked the Ricoh reps and store owners for hosting and putting on the event. But there were too many people. I just put my camera away, listened to the others a bit, looked around the store a bit and left. I'll look for some of their other classes on line.

I think a better number would've been around 25. Working with the number of people that were there that day, if people were broken up into groups. Everyone could've watched and heard the instructors while also getting some shoot time in. The free for all paparazzi situation was a turn off for a few of us. And the lecture did go long, but I liked some of Dan's thought processes on things. So I felt that made up for that extra time.

Below please find e-mail addresses of a few of the models you worked with this past Saturday at Denver Pro Photo, in case you want to send them some photos. I am trying to get the e-mails addresses for the other models as well and will post them when I get them. Thanks all.

I thought the event was great. I agree with many others that there were too many people for much shooting. I too gave up after trying to dodge heads and elbows. That being said, it was well worth the time and the Free cost. I greatly appreciate the Pentax, Ricoh, and Denver Pro Photo for putting on this event; and learned a lot, as well as was reminded of some of the ABC's of photography that I sometimes forget from the instructor. Thank you!

I am hoping you all enjoyed the event. I am also hoping you can send us some photos you took, especially if you caught each other or models holding one of the K-50 cameras for me to send on to our sponsors at Pentax.

  • Sean M.

I would say this meetup was definitely helpful in the presentations that were given. My only complaint would be how hot it ended up being. The paparazzi feel was interesting and was a reminder that I should always carry both my lenses to be prepared!

Kristal, I see you have posted our Digital Photo Academy logo and link back to our site. Thank you for that. Also, thank you for including the 1/2 price option for any Composition in the Field class that is available to all Front Range Photography members. These classes do not exceed 12 attendees, and are held in several locations throughout the Denver area. Instead of $99 for the 3 hour sessions, members only pay $50. With smaller groups than what we held at Denver Pro Photo, people seem to get a lot out of the sessions. To go to the schedule, click on the link, http://www.digitalphotoacademy.com/DpaObjects/location/7#classLists and know that as classes sell out, we add more. Call us at[masked] with questions. Happy Shooting and I hope that awful flooding situation subsides.

We are pleased you found it enjoyable and helpful Gary.

      September 15, 2013

  • richard r.

I am hearing that there were enjoyable aspects of the program but that it was also too crowded and too hot. I was here at our headquarters so I could not personally experience it. I also understand that there are 6 people to be announced as winners of our regular Composition in the Field classes. These paid classes, are no more than 12 people at a time so hopefully these 6 winners will enjoy that. And as it gets cooler during the year, when we use the Denver Pro Photo space, it should not be too hot. We will keep trying and appreciate that you took the time to attend.

If there was 3rd lighting setup that would have helped tremendously! The 2 there had too many people.

      September 15, 2013

Good to know. I believe that this can be arranged. During cooler weather!!

All in all it was a great event. Lots of tips to learn from Dan's presentation slides. Wondering if the presentation slide is available on his website. Wish few of the participants would have been a little more considerate allowing the rest to click few pictures instead of hogging up the spot. My only suggestion is next time break the participants into small group and limit 15-20 mins to each group.

    1 · September 14, 2013

    • Jennifer H.

I wish we had more time to actually shoot! People did hog up the spots. Like the idea of splitting groups smaller.

      September 14, 2013

    • richard r.

Sri, if you provide your e-mail address and send it to me at [masked], I will send you the power point presentation.

      September 15, 2013

  • Jennifer H.

It was advertised as only having 1 hour of power point with 2 hours of shooting. It was an okay event. I wish we did get the full 2 hours of shooting. That was my first studio shoot. I am glad it was free, otherwise I would want my money back.

    September 15, 2013

    • richard r.

Yes, Jennifer, my understanding is that the power point was an hour longer than expected. I apologize for that.

    Amazing! Lots of good information!

    September 15, 2013

  • Dane "Colfax" S.

A good refresher for those of us who know photography. I left early, as there were too many people at once with the one model session. At one point, I stood back, and it felt as if the paparazzi was taking photos, as there were so many cameras shooting at once. I tried to get some shots, but some were not mindful of those in the back, and did not seem to notice, so I left. But, thank you for the opportunity.

There are already 30 signups there but if all 16 of you on the waiting list want to join the morning class, we can make that work. Am I being a diva if I request that those of you already scheduled for the afternoon class, confirm, and not ask to move to the morning class instead. We don't want to allow this to become unwieldy!! Please feel free to call me on my cell phone at[masked] or e-mail me at [masked]. Looking forward to hearing from all of you. Thanks!!

Looks like everybody so far is Nikon or Canon!! I spoke to Harold at Denver Pro Photo and he says that there will be a 10% for all of the Front Range members on MOST products. I will try and get more specifics from him and pass on the news to all of you. There are still a number of you who have not posted which camera with which you intend to appear. No biggie, we will figure it out.

Hi Richard, I use a Canon T1i. I thought i would make it easy for you, because I don't think that info is in my profile. Thanks for doing this workshop. I am really looking forward to it.

    August 28, 2013

    • richard r.

We are looking forward to it as well Diane. I just checked your profile and as I understand it you have been into photography for a couple of years now? While I am not a photographer personally , I come from a photography family. Search my wife, Jill Enfield, on YouTube and see a fun 2 minute quick time video of her making a portrait using a technique that is similar to what Matthew Brady used during the Civil War!

      August 28, 2013

    • richard r.

One other thing: There will be a signup sheet at Denver Pro Photo. If we promise not to nag you or try and sell you insurance, is there a chance we could get your full name, e-mail and phone number. We ask for this to check with you if by any chance you are delayed or have changed your mind about attending. Then we immediately call the people on the waiting list. If this is a problem to provide this information, please do not worry. We want to adhere to the Front Range Photography approach to things. Thanks again.

The big day is coming. On a separate note, click on the link, http://hansgutknecht.com/Composition_In_Photography.pdf, to view a layout that Hans Gutknecht, a veteran shooter with the LA Daily News sent to us. It offers his thoughts, including illustrating images, on various techniques for composing powerful images. Are you all interested in receiving this sort of thing every now and then?
