We believe the best way to improve your skills it so shoot with those who are experienced and can guide you in your quest to improve. Hope you can take advantage of the opportunity!)

Colorado's Most Famous Sand Box . . .

This is one of my favorite places to hang out. If you don't come along . We'll shoot a couple of sunrises and a sunset and a lot of big piles of sand in between!! Did you know that Star Dune is the highest sand dune in North America at 600 feet above the parking lot!. You can climb to the top if you are so inclined! It's quite the view.

The Sand Dunes are nestled at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range where 5 of Colorado's Fourteeners reside. The views are amazing, but you realize that by now!

Here are some of the things I hope to encourage your photographic growth in:

•  Image pre-visualization

• Composition

• Exposure

• Depth of field

• Lens selection

• Image enhancement in Photoshop

• and more . . .

Call The Inn of The Rio Grande for a special rate of $84. Tell them you are with the "Soul Road Trips" for this special rate.

Friday May 30, 2014

6p - Meet in the lobby of our host hotel, Inn of the Rio Grande. We'll head to dinner and an evening of good conversation.

Saturday May 31, 2014

4:30a - Yep! that early! We'll meet in the lobby for a trip to the Great Sand Dunes and an amazing sunrise. We'll shoot for the morning then return to the hotel for lunch and an afternoon image critique.

6p - Return trip to the Sand Dunes and a beautiful sunset and some "sweet light" photography. Clear skies and we can do some star photographs if everyone like!

Sunday June 1, 2014

4:30a - Sunrise session for those who would like another chance at an amazing photographic opportunity. Those of you who prefer the snooze button can catch up with us a little later. We return to the hotel at noon and grab lunch and head into the classroom for more image critique and a Photoshop tips and techniques demonstration. I'll share with you how I create my style of fine art imagery. Computers are optional!

Schedule subject to change if I can make it better!

If you'd like to see what you too can create, visit my fine art web site at

www.soulimagesgallery.com

This workshop is limited to 20 attendees so that I can run around and get with each of you to help and instruct as much as you desire. It is open to all levels of skill & desire so don’t be shy . . . reserve your spot right now! (This trip needs a minimum of 8 to make it a go)

Great location, great group of photographers and Jeff Johnson was a great instructor! The classroom postmortem was exceptional and I am thinking of quitting work so I can spend the time to apply some of the neat methods Jeff taught us. Thanks!!

Jeff and all, you can post your best images here on the Meetup. Just go to "Photos" link above and look for the right album. I started one for you. Thanks Jeff! Where's my cinnamon roll?

    Thanks!

  • Jeff J.

Hey Tatiana....When we are ready to head to the dunes I am sure we can get you a ride from the hotel. We usually carpool so it should be just fine!

    May 26, 2014

  • Tatiana

Hello Jeff. I am looking forward for the Sand Dunes. I will met the group at the Inn, however, I will need a car pool to the park. Do you know if someone can give a ride? Thanks.

    Anyone interested in camping?

    May 6, 2014

    • Jesse M.

Yeah, where were you thinking? I already checked the park and they were booked. I was thinking about just doing a drive through the first come first serve loop on Friday when I got there, but wasn't expecting to get lucky.

      May 6, 2014

    • Scott H

Not sure actually that would be first option. I know there are 'off road' options an sites that are not part of the park. I have a Rubicon so I can go anywhere really lol

Yessiree....I'm thinking stars. Saturday night we will be photographing sunset and there is a fine crescent of a new moon so stars should be visible soon after sunset, 8:18pm! Depending on the coulds we'll give it a try. A GoPro is great but not necessary Brad. I'll show you what I do if you all what I have done and we'll have some fun!

    May 3, 2014

  • Valerie H.

I am interested in carpooling and possibly room sharing. Please e-mail me at [masked] if you are attending and also interested.

  • Glenn S.

I've been at the dunes a few times, but never with other photographers on a photography schedule. I'm looking forward to this! I'm interested in setting up a GoPro for time lapse work, which is new to me. Anyone else tuned in to this?

    April 28, 2014

    • Brad W.

Are you thinking stars? I don't have a GoPro but have done some night photography and would not mind trying again.

      April 29, 2014

  • Tricia R.

I’m thinking about this if I can ride with someone (also perhaps share in the “girls” room)?

    Hi Latish,
As far as lenses goes you can get by with a lot of different focal lengths at the Sand Dunes. Using a long lens can compress several dunes closer together giving a great appearance of many dunes in a small area. A wide lens will give you great overall landscape cause you will capture the mountains and the dunes in one shot. I recommend each of these lenses if you have them. We will actually be on the dunes three different times (weather permitting) so you could concentrate on using the long telephoto lens for one of those sessions and the wider angle the other session. I will certainly be near by for your assistance for the entire trip. Look forward to meeting you and sharing many great ideas for photographs at the Great Sand Dunes!!

I'm interested in this workshop. I am looking for hotel accommodation and car pooling.

I am new to photography. Can someone help me what lens should I have? I have D7100 and 35mm 1.8.

Is this event still open - the tab says that RSVP's are closed. Where do I go to RSVP/pay my registration fee.

    February 24, 2014

    • Kristal K.

Valerie, We seem to have a glitch here with this event. I either need to call Meetup tech support to get it fixed or delete this event and start over. IT IS ON! Bear with us! Thanks!

      February 24, 2014

    • Kristal K.

      Fixed! go for it!

      February 24, 2014

It is May 30- June 1. The October date was from last year when our dear government shut down the National Parks!

    January 26, 2014

  • Susan A.

Top says May, bottom says Oct. Which is right?

    January 25, 2014

  • Jeff J.

Unless our dear government closes us down again!! Plus I do have to have a minimum of registrants to make the trip. That is 8 people registered.

    December 10, 2013

  • Kent G.

Jeff my intent is to make this trip. I will be saving my spare change to pay for this. Hold me a spot and I will have my bag of quarters to you soon.:-) Kent

    • Kristal K.

Quarters! I was saving pennies! :)

      December 10, 2013

  • Kristal K.

This trip was rescheduled from the fall. Jeff wanted everyone to know he will need a minimum number of attendees. The National Park Service has a usage fee that is due weeks before the event. Once I get that date and Jeff's minimum, I will post that for all to see.

Thank you for understanding. Jeff is an awesome photographer and teacher so this will be a very good trip!

Thanks Jeff. Looking forward to the experience.
    Dave...

    September 9, 2013

  • Jeff J.

Hi Dave. We do NOT travel non-paved roads during this road trip.

    September 8, 2013

  • Dave C.

OK, so this is not a meetup but it sounds like a lot of fun. Since this has been done before, can anyone tell me if we will be travelling on any non-paved roads? It makes a difference in which vehicle we drive. Looking forward to meeting some members of this group.
    Thanks, Dave...

    What does the fee includes?

    August 23, 2013

    • Kristal K.

Liz the fee includes instruction at the workshop with Jeff Johnson. It does not include food/lodging.

Wish I could come, what a great opprotunity but there is a conflict in my schedule that I cannot change

    August 23, 2013

  • Kristal K.

One suggestion that might help. We try to organize a group of "girls" and share hotel rooms. That way you can get the cost down and still enjoy a great weekend with Jeff Johnson. Feel free to post roommie requests here! Carpooling is a good idea too.
