National Western Stock Show Parade

NEW PLAN for the NWSS Parade, please read below:

Event Changed to SHOW and GO, no formal Meetup Prior, possible Meetup Post Parade. (read below)

Originally I planned to host this Meetup, but I will be out of town this day.  Fortunately Liz (from the New Year's Fireworks Meetup) has graciously agreed to be the Event Host.

After talking with Liz we decided to change the format of the event. In the past when we have Meetups at large, crowded events we found members get lost on their way to the meeting place and as event hosts end up waiting for people who don't show up.

So instead of meeting at the beginning of the event. Liz wants to poll the group to see who will be interested in meeting afterwards.

Liz also mentioned there are so many other shooting opportunities prior to the parade that many of the members may not want to miss.  Liz will point out these opportunities in the next day or two, so be sure to check your email or this announcement.

Parade of Cowboys, Cowgirls, Rodeo Queens, Clowns & Marching Bands!

January is the month when Denver welcomes the world at the National Western Stock Show. The kickoff parade is my favorite. Why? Because this is when the cowboys walk the Longhorns down 17th Street!

This unique sight is so much fun to see, cowboys, longhorns amongst the grand old buildings of Lodo. It's not a sight we get to see everyday, so let's capture it with our cameras.

Playing Hooky From Work?

Yes, it's a workday, but maybe you can breakaway for an early lunch! The parade begins at noon. There's plenty of activity with folks staging for the parade in that area. Once the longhorns come down Wynkoop St, get ready to run, they don't mosey along!

Timing is Everything!
Since this is a parade, being on time is important.  If you are late, you are on your own, I'll be somewhere in the crowd with my camera!  Parking is usually best in the many parking garages.  If you are lucky enough to be able to catch the RTD Lightrail, that is also a good option.

Lunch Maybe?
Depending upon the group desires, we may make plans to  meet after for a quick bite to eat.  We can make these plans just prior to the Parade.

What to bring
Camera with a long lens, zoom if you have it.  It's my opinion that tripods and crowds don't mix, so I don't bother to bring mine.  Running shoes are important if you plan to get ahead of the Longhorns! Of course us city folk need to remember to watch where we step!   Dress warm, January on 17th St. can be really chilly.

More Stock Show fun if anyone is interested. Please post photos to the same album if you decide to go. Stock Show Steer Gets Royal Treatment
If you want to get up close and personal with the National Western Stock Show’s 2013 Grand Champion steer, mosey on over to The Brown Palace Hotel on Friday, January 25. The prize animal, adorned with a garland of roses, will be escorted down a red carpet at 11 a.m. to take center stage during afternoon tea (the steer takes his tea from a sterling silver punch bowl. Two sugars, please!) in the famed hotel’s lobby. This is the last hurrah before heading to the auction of champions that evening. The public is welcome to join in for FREE photos with the champ from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Rodeo royalty of the two-legged variety will also be on hand for pictures and autographs. 312 17th Street, Denver,[masked]

Hope you had as much fun at the stock show as I did!
Wondered if anyone had any photos of Stretch the nine foot cowboy atop his trusty bicycle steed, Meals on Wheels? I was just in front of the Wells Fargo Stage Coach. Hope you can help. THANK YOU!

    Cheers!

Ha, ha Clark! Exactly how I feel. I have several photos of the back of people's heads. They pop into my view just as I click the button.

A little colder than I had hoped, but lots of interesting and colorful subjects in the parade. Think I will bring a step stool to the next parade so I can shoot over the people that kept walking in front of me.

Good point Martin! There was a lot of action in front of the Oxford Hotel. Seem this was where the beauty queens got dressed. They happily posed for the many photographers who were there.

It was fun. Looking at the other photos that were shared, I think many of us were at the corner of 17th and Wazee. Thanks for organizing the meetup.

If you would like to meet after the parade for lunch, beer, coffee etc. after the parade please let me know either by replying to this comment or adding a note to your RSVPs. I was going to suggest the Wynkoop Brewery but am open to suggestions. Please let me know so I can get some numbers and call ahead if they take reservations.

FYI on Westernaires in Coors Lot A, If you are not a part of their organization they will ask you to stay away from the area. You can probably get early preparations at individual trailers but once they are in uniform and on horses they become very restrictive.

For those of you new to Denver, just wanted to mention that there is a free Mall ride bus that runs along 16th street and since it's just one block over from the parade, it will be an easy way to navigate up and down 17th to go to and from parking or various spots along the parade.

    **Parade Update**

Just to reiterate Kristal’s update – We will not be meeting at Union Station before the parade. It will be crowded and there will be a lot of shooting opportunities before, during and after the parade. The decision to cancel meeting on the front end was additionally, to give you more time to take advantage of those opportunities and to plan how and where you are going to shoot from. Some of you may want to stake out spots along 17th and some of you will want to run with the parade I am guessing. -- There is the Parade staging area at Coors Field Parking Lots A&B at Park Avenue West/23rd Street and Wazee. I have never been there and cannot give you any further information about how accessible that is to the public when they are getting ready for the parade but thought it might be an interesting place to get some close ups of the bulls and horses if you want to try. (more below)

--The Parade itself will run for 15 blocks along 17th street starting at Union Station at noon and ending somewhere near the iconic Brown Palace Hotel.

-- From past experience/mistakes I have learned to pay more attention to the background when shooting at parades. You may want to use the 360 degree people/street view in Google Maps to scan for buildings along 17th that might make a good backdrop for your shots. There are some nice old red brick buildings that make for a good background. -- There is a Stock Show Barbecue held in conjunction with the downtown parade. Beginning
at 11:30 a.m. in the atrium of the Wells Fargo Building at 17th Street & Broadway, with a VIP western fashion show. I’m waiting to hear back whether the public has access to view the fashion show or not so stay tuned. There will be western music as well. Meal tickets are $9 and benefit 4-H. The parade will last approximately an hour if you want to try this venue after the parade.
