Rocky Mountain National Park is home to the Fairy Slipper

Calypso bulbosa. Sounds like a character from Pirates of the Caribbean but is in fact one of the species of orchids that grow wild in the Montane forests of the Rocky Mountains. Our destination will be the Wild Basin area of Rocky Mountain National Park.

An easy hike past Copeland Falls, past Calypso Cascades, to Ouzel Falls. Our quarry will be hiding on the forest floor (Yes this means you will have to lay on the ground). The flower blooms May-June and many can be found within the first mile from the trailhead so hiking is not a necessity (depending on the parking situation). Look closely at the forest floor where the edge of the trail meets the forest. They are that close but easy to miss if you don't know they're there.

Those who aren't interested in flowers can shoot the waterfalls and cascades of Ouzel and St. Vrain Creeks. This is a non-strenuous, super easy hike.

Times:
1:00PM Meet at Dinosaur Parking Lots
I-70 and Hwy26/Hwy40(Colfax) 1 exit west of C470 (exit 259)
Just north of I-70 there are huge free lots named after dinosaurs
for car-pooling. Turn left on Hwy40 like you're going to Mother
Cabrini Shrine and they are right there. Google Map Details Here.

1:15PM Leave for RMNP. (Map of Wild Basin Area )

7 North to the Wild Basin in RMNP (It's near Meeker Park)
-or-
The more fun scenic route.

3:00PM Arrive at Wild Basin. Not really sure how long it will take. Should be there
no later than this time. Assess parking situation. This is a very popular
place. Shuttle people to trailhead if necessary and drivers will have to
park and walk.

6:00PM Leave Wild Basin

7:00PM It's a 2.7 mile hike to Ouzel Falls. Standard hiking rate is 2miles per hour.
7 South to Lyons. Head for Oskar Blues Brewery for Food.
Website says they're open until 10:00PM. Should take about 1/2
hour to get there from the Wild Basin. 45min tops.
