This past week I spent some time in the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Parks, where the mosquitoes were absolutely terrible! While we were out shooting at one of the more famous photographer spots, we got in on a discussion about bug sprays that were safe for photography equipment. I guess I never really gave it any thought, but come to find out that DEET, a common ingredient in many bug sprays is corrosive to plastic and plastic like materials. Which means it could be damaging to photography equipment.
I wanted to post this little tidbit, because I had no clue this was something to be concerned about. I would imagine with all the snow melt and runoff this spring, mosquitoes are going to be concern when we are out in the wilderness "getting nature on us". Any one have any good mosquito repellant ideas they would like to share? One of the photographers we met said he uses a Bounce Dryer sheet 1/2 tucked into the back of his pants...and swears by it. I haven't tried it, so I don't know if it works or not, but I am going to give it a try. Keep ya posted! Teri V. |

Teri, that's a great tip to share. I have a couple of insect repellant plastic wristbands that I put on. Now I want to go see what's in them though to make sure I won't have a problem with them! I used them at last year's Littleton Western Welcome Week fireworks and plan to use them this year too.
I've heard of the Bounce dryer sheet idea, but can't vouch for it myself. Here's what snopes.com has to say about it all: www.snopes.com/oldwives/skeeters.asp |

Hi there Teri,
Deet is poison. If it does that to plastic imagine what it doesnt to your body? I usually only use natural solutions. You can google natural solutions for repellent. But I have heard that eating lots of garlic helps keep them away too. Of course a location with tons of dragonflies doesnt hurt. I love shooting them. (smiles). I have heard that some of the natural solutions do work. I just can't recall them all now. |
