Voyageur Paddle & Apres Paddle Social

Explore your Ottawa River, the gateway to Canada and the most beautiful downtown any city may have.  Paddle with us to local island beaches and view landmarks along the Ottawa River.  You've never seen the city like this.  See why people from out of town are always amazed at our good fortune and why others envy our fun. This escape from downtown hustle and bustle is in our front yard, on the river.  You will see wildlife, natural features, and impressive manors. Bring friends for this rare opportunity to experience your urban wild.  Afterwards we socialize at a local restobar or dock party (BYOB).

*Please note: those who prepay online or who send payment via email bank transfer get priority seating. $10 for those who have come out at least once before. Half-price to those who volunteered to run events. Free to those who took the paddling clinic and want to practice their strokes. This event doubles as a paddling clinic, in which basic paddling skills will be taught. It does not replace a full basic paddling course, which we offer throughout the season.

Our area was discovered by canoe by Champlain 400 years ago in June, 1613. Paddling is a great opportunity to explore how it was explored. Go back in history and enjoy the present.

The Tour:

We gather at 6:30 pm for an evening paddle along a stretch of Heritage Waterway.   We decide on the dock which of eight different routes we can take, including to a secluded island beach for a swim if it is a hot day, Parliament Hill and ambassador's row for sight seeing, to a shipwreck, up one of several inlets and a creek, or up the Gatineau to the Casino for 30 minute slot machine gambling break. Kayakers and those who bring their own boats are welcome too and save $5.

Bring your own snacks and refreshments for our apres canoe social at Chez Savage or head to the Pirate Rest'O'Bord for apres paddle refreshments, depending on what the group wants.  The whole evening winds up around 10:30 pm - 11 pm or so.

This is for beginners to advanced. Beginners will be paired with more experienced paddlers and will be given a brief lesson.

Payment: Discount for online pre-payments and for all program members. Members and those who pay online get a $5 discount for the trouble. Others can pay $25 on the day of the event. If you don't show you will be held responsible for your payment, as we depended on your attendance to reserve this rental canoe and this is only fair.   Those who want to come more than once can buy two voyages for $35 at a time or eight for $100.  This way you get fit as a paddler and a better chance to explore the 8 different routes from Pointe-Gatineau.  Ask John for more details.

The weather has never been a problem, so there is no reason not to come.  If there's rain, it passes through quickly and provides some nice paddling opportunities.  Even so, if there's a cancellation, we will make this up another day or week.

There is no better way to spend time than on the water with other outdoors enthusiasts.  Paddles and lifejackets are included, however, you are welcome to bring your own if you prefer.

Legal Safety Requirements:

All paddlers are responsible for ensuring that proper safety equipment is on board their canoe or kayak, including bailers, sound device (whistle/horn), floating throw rope, and flashlight. These are made available as part of your rental, but it is your responsibility to keep on board, should there be either an emergency or a police check (fine of $80 for not having these would be charged to the canoe / kayakers without these in their boat).

Things to bring:

- snack and water / juice

- camera (dry sack to protect camera - owner assumes own risk to device if lost or damaged).

- suntan lotion

- hat

- rain gear

- water shoes

- change of clothes

- swim suit / towel

- BYOB / $ for the Apres paddle refreshments.

About the leader:

John Gaudaur Savage is a voyageur descendent on both sides of the family. Family lore maintains that one of his voyageur ancestors, Antoine Gaudaur, fought in the War of 1812 against the Americans at the Battle of Mackinaw Island when he was part of the Northwest Company. He has led local canoe and rowing trips on the Ottawa and Gatineau Rivers for the past decade. He is willing to share his knowledge of local history and its environment.  Find out from Captain Savage the secrets of our River and why an evening on the water is better than any day in an office.

** Risk: All participants agree to assume their own personal risk, as ALL outdoors activities come with a measure of risk inherent in the activity.  Even so, everything is risk in life and no one gets out alive.  Enjoy your life and come paddling! Please ask John to borrow a dry sack or bring your own, to protect cameras and other valuables. (Please note, since 2008, we have only had one capsize during lesson when a storm whipped up. The crew was easily rescued.  Our track record is very good. )**

Another excellent evening of paddling, and laughs around the campfire. Always a highlight of my week!

Wow! What a great forecast for another Tuesday night paddle. Ten degrees at night is perfect temperature for night paddling, allowing us not to overheat, yet warm enough to stay cozy around the dock camp fire we traditionally have afterwards. If you haven't yet joined us, the stars are beautiful and summer never ends when you get out like this outdoors. See you all and bring friends. Even fair weather paddlers will enjoy this kind of outing in Canada's most exciting night entertainment district, the Ottawa River in Pointe-Gat.
