Session on Machine Learning and Data Mining.
The session will be run by Erik Linstead who is a faculty member at Chapman and a software engineer at Boeing. Here is his description:
"As the size of data repositories continues to grow, so does the need for mathematically-grounded tools and techniques for building models to succinctly describe the patterns found within them. In this session we provide an overview of the theory and practice of mining big data. Attendees will be introduced to the essential concepts of supervised and unsupervised machine learning, and have a chance to apply common data mining algorithms to real data sets using tools such as Weka. Advanced techniques such as kernel methods and deep learning will also be surveyed as time allows."
Weka is a collection of machine learning algorithms for data mining tasks. The algorithms can either be applied directly to a dataset or called from your own Java code. Weka contains tools for data pre-processing, classification, regression, clustering, association rules, and visualization. Weka can be installed on Windows, OS/X or Linux so I hope everyone can install it on their laptops before the meetup. We can then spend our time doing actual data mining rather than just configuring software.
Download and install Weka, for free, before you come to the meetup.
