Package management

We will discuss package management for the major distributions - yum and apt being the most widely used.  Package management is more than just yum and apt though; dpkg and rpm may not be as well known, but are necessary for installing and maintaining packages.

More than talking about how to use Yum and Apt (the major two package managers), we will look at the history of package management (there are more than just Yum and Apt), the concept of package management, how Yum and Apt operate from a high level, and maybe some other package managers if there is time.  After researching this topic, I found there are several great resources for more information than you ever wanted on Yum and Apt.

Bring a laptop as well.  We will try to work in some examples of package management and software installation.

The location is across the street from the church, below the big blue water tower. Use the entrance between the water tower and the cemetery on the south side if Mt Vernon Hwy.

Is this location in the Sandy Spring UMC church, or somewhere else? Street View on Google for 85 Mt.Vernon is looking into the woods or a cemetery...

awesome, sounds good. I'll definitly be coming to the next meeting and checking things out. I've heard of Linux being so powerful and a great OS for programmers of all levels.

The topic will change depending on how much we discuss each meeting.

Removed the reference to our meeting on 3/12. The meeting overview will probably be changed soon. I set a recurring meeting and didn't think about making the content fairly general.

Do we always do the same topic?

Also the "3/12" reference confuses new people - me ;o).
